Police bust kidnap gang in their midst
THE POLICE have unmasked an organized gang operating within their midst, and have so far charged six current and former officers, including four regional special tactics operatives, with crimes of theft and kidnapping going back to 1999.
Smer still the most popular party in Slovakia
THE LEADING party in Slovakia's ruling coalition, Smer, is still the most widely supported, even though the party's popularity has been decreasing.The latest public opinion poll from the Statistics Office's Institute for Public Opinion Research (ÚVVM), which polled 1,110 adults from April 1 to April 10, showed that 42.9 percent of those polled support Smer.
Slovak doctors headed to Libya
THE FIRST STEPS have been taken towards fulfilling Prime Minister Robert Fico's offer to Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi to treat HIV-positive Libyan children in Slovakia.Three medical specialists and a representative from the Slovak Health Ministry were to leave for Benghazi on April 29 for a five-day visit to Libya, during which time they will examine the children and find which ones would benefit most from treatment in Slovakia.
Civilian oversight of police needed
THE POLICE should be commended for ridding their ranks of the likes of Miroslav Jacko, one of the six current and former officers jailed for their roles in a kidnapping and theft ring that had been operating within the force since 1999.
Kelemen snags Music Critics' Prize
HUNGARIAN violinist Barnabás Kelemen won the Music Critics' Award at the Central European Music Festival in Žilina on April 21. The prize entitles the young musician, who topped the International Violin Competition in Indianapolis in 2002 and holds numerous other prizes, to perform next year at the festival.
A holiday in the dentist's chair
FOR MANY TOURISTS, a holiday to Slovakia involves sitting in a café in the streets of Bratislava's downtown. However, some foreigners visit Slovakia just to sit in a dentist's chair.Slovakia's entry to the EU and the arrival of low-cost airlines flung open the gates to health tourism. Foreigners mainly from Great Britain, Ireland and Austria come to Slovakia to receive medical treatment, especially dental services.
Mečiar's path
As Robert Fico's advisor for media, Ľubica Mižičková said she wanted to convince Fico to return to TV talk shows, and that she wanted to "help create normal relations between the prime minister and the media". Two months later, the prime minister has returned to talk shows, but his relations with the media remain deeply substandard.
