Minister Harabin blasts Special Court
Justice Minister Štefan Harabin levelled sharp criticism at the Special Court and its judges during an appearance on Slovak Television on February 16.
Customs officials seize 164 kilos of cocaine
SLOVAK customs officials and policemen seized a record shipment of cocaine in early February. They uncovered 163.8 kilograms of the drug dissolved in bottled wine in a warehouse in the Dunajská Streda District, the ČTK newswire wrote. The street value of the drug is estimated at around Sk1.64 billion (€50 million).

The oldest globe in Slovakia found in Komárno
WORKERS at the Podunajské Museum in Komárno have found the oldest globe in Slovakia in the museum's stores. The celestial globe from 1603 is a work of the Dutch astronomer and cartographer Willem Janszoon Blaeu from Amsterdam, the SITA newswire wrote. It depicts the celestial spheres of the northern and southern hemispheres.
V4 and Baltic states to negotiate energy policy
The Visegrad Four countries and three Baltic states have agreed to form a common energy policy, the Hospodárske Noviny daily wrote.

THE EURO-Socialists, by an absolute majority of votes, has decided to renew the candidacy of Slovakia's ruling party Smer for membership in the Party of European Socialists (PES). The European Socialists did so on February 14, despite the fact that the Slovak National Party (SNS) remains part of Slovakia's ruling coalition. PES suspended Smer's candidacy in October 2006 after Robert Fico formed a coalition with the SNS.
Housing real estate prices in Slovakia up 24%
THE AVERAGE price per square metre of housing real estate in Slovakia grew 24 percent to Sk37,306 over 2007. In the last quarter of 2007, the average prices posted the highest growth of the whole year, up 32.5 percent year-on-year, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovak economy ranks 35th worldwide
THE SLOVAK economy landed 35th worldwide in the 2008 Index of Economic Freedom survey conducted by the Heritage Foundation and the Wall Street Journal. Slovakia thus moved five spots upwards and scored 68.7 percent, the SITA newswire wrote.
Driver survives crash with armoured vehicle
ON FEBRUARY 7, a very lucky Škoda Fabia driver sustained only minor injuries after colliding with an armoured military vehicle known as the Alligator. The armoured vehicle crashed into the passenger car at 7:45 on one of the busiest roads in Slovakia near Žilina, the Pravda daily wrote. The crash caused a huge traffic jam between Žilina and Martin that lasted over two hours.

THE SLOVAK Ministry of Foreign Affairs sharply condemned the attempt to assasinate the President of East Timor José Ramos-Horta and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao on February 11. The assasination attempt was made by groups of revolting soldiers in the capital, Dili, the ministry wrote in a press release.
Czech hikers survive avalanche
FOUR mountaineers from the Czech Republic escaped a frozen grave in the High Tatras on February 8. An avalanche hit them in the Zmrzlá Valey close to Zelené Pleso lake. At that time, avalanche dogs and their handlers were undergoing a week-long training in the Tatras, the Pravda daily wrote.

LAST year the government opened up the second, 'capitalisation', pillar of the pension system for six months, allowing more than 1.5 million people the opportunity to leave the pillar from January until June 2008.
