Customs seizes over a million Ukrainian cigarettes since Schengen entry
Since Slovakia joined the Schengen zone on December 21, customs officials have seized over 1.54 million cigarettes illegally imported from Ukraine, it was reported on February 19. This equates to an average of 25,679 cigarettes a day, while the total amount seized in the given period represents tax evasion of more than Sk4 million (€121,000).

Labour Centre: Unemployment rate was 8.06 percent in January
Unemployment in Slovakia rose by 0.07 percentage points month-on-month in January to 8.06 percent, the Centre for Labour, Social Affairs and the Family (UPSVaR) announced on February 18. When compared to the same period last year, the unemployment rate had fallen by 1.39 percentage points, the TASR newswire wrote.
PPP projects proceed in line with plans
The Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry is proceeding with PPP (public-private partnership) projects on schedule and the opposition can monitor the process, said Minister Ľubomír Vážny on February 18 in response to calls from the opposition to make the PPP projects transparent, the TASR newswire wrote.
One third of Slovaks spend entire income on household expenses
One-third of Slovaks spend all their monthly income on household expenses, according to a study called Deposits 2007 that was carried out by the GfK Slovakia agency in November on a sample of 2,000 respondents, it was reported on February 18.
