Bill's commie roots evoke passions
MiklÓs Haraszti gave a spirited performance at a Culture Ministry press conference on February 7. ONE year before the arrival of the European single currency, citizens of Slovakia are mostly afraid of the possible hike in prices. The fear of price increases pushed the fear of unemployment to second place in the latest Eurobarometer for the first time since the spring of 2005. In autumn 2007, when the latest Eurobarometer was conducted, Slovak consumers faced the biggest price hike since 2001. On the contrary, the number of jobless people is gradually decreasing, the Pravda daily wrote.

U.S. Embassy: Slovakia should meet visa-free regime criteria
Slovakia is expected to have met the criteria to be considered for a visa-free regime with the United States of America when new data on the number of rejected visa applications is released on September 30, 2008, U.S. embassy officials said on Thursday, February 14.
Slovak economy put on big spurt of 14.1% in final quarter of 2007
Slovakia's gross domestic product grew by a record 14.1 percent year-on-year in the final quarter of 2007, according to a preliminary estimate published on February 14 by the Statistics Office, which expects growth of 10.3 percent for the whole of 2007. The stats office said that this particularly high GDP growth was driven mainly by an anticipated increase in VAT and excise taxes on cigarettes, which prompted people to stock up on Sk8.7 billion (€266-million) worth of this commodity in Q4 of 2007. Stripped of this tax effect, GDP is thought to have grown by a real 9.7 percent in the final quarter of the year and by 9.2 percent for all of 2007.
