Attractions and public transport in Bratislava free next weekend
Many organisations in the Slovak capital will offer entry free of charge, with public transport also free on Saturday and Sunday (April 26 and 27), Bratislava City Hall announced on April 21.
Fronc: Mikolaj gave in to SMK for support on Lisbon Treaty

Csáky denies deals over treaty
THE LEADER of the Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK), Pál Csáky, denies that any deals lay behind his party's decision to switch sides and back the government in a crucial recent vote in parliament. The decision left the opposition's strategy to block the controversial new Press Code in tatters, and has led to recriminations between the SMK and its former opposition partners. In an interview with The Slovak Spectator, Csáky also suggests that the new Press Code's so-called right of reply, which has attracted international criticism, will not be widely used.
Brhlovce rocks as dwellings open their doors
THE UNIQUE rock dwellings in Brhlovce threw open their doors to the public on April 11, attracting around 200 visitors to this historic reservation for folk architecture. The tourists were greeted by expert guides, an exhibition about the village's past and present, and a local museum, the SITA newswire wrote.

SPP Foundation: Hlavička Scholarship Programme
THE SPP Foundation has assigned Sk4 million to support university students. Scholarships will be granted for foreign study stays, summer schools, internships and research stays anywhere in Europe. The deadline for the second round of applications is May 5, 2008. In the second round, Sk2 million will be granted to students for projects in the winter 2008/2009 semester. One of the requirements is to introduce a project of research, professional or practical character that the student wants to carry out.
STV gets a new boss
THE PUBLIC service television broadcaster Slovak Television (STV) has a new general manager: Štefan Nižňanský. Nižňanský is STV's fourteenth general manager since 1989. He was the second director appointed by the STV Council, the authority which is elected by parliament to oversee the public broadcaster.
Nationalist MP caught out over Swiss disability pension
JOZEF Rydlo, a member of parliament for one of the junior coalition parties, the Slovak National Party (SNS), misled the Swiss authorities, who paid him a monthly disability pension of about Sk30,000 per month for several years. As a result the Social Security Office in Bern has cancelled Rydlo's pension, the Pravda daily wrote on April 12. The SNS is overlooking its deputy's blunder.
Construction of Žilina Aupark restarted
THE CONSTRUCTION of the Aupark shopping mall at Štúrovo Square in downtown Žilina has started again, three weeks after a town court ordered the work be brought to a halt. That decision was overturned by the Žilina Regional Construction Office, with which the investor had filed an appeal, the Pravda daily wrote.
Trouble around land restitutions
MARTA Hykaníková, a 76-year-old retiree living in the small town of Nové Mesto nad Váhom in western Slovakia, has proven to be a boon for current and former Slovak politicians looking to buy land restituted from the Slovak Land Fund.
New town to spring up near Nitra
FOUR hundred and thirty-five hectares of land between the Nitra river and northern bypass will be developed over the next 10 to 40 years into Párovské Lúky, a new "town" that will house 30,000-35,000 inhabitants, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia becomes warehouse superpower
REAL estate services provider CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) found in a recent survey that an increasing number of developers are choosing to place their logistic centres in eastern Slovakia. The developers site favourable land and labour prices in the east, as well as an expectation that a highway connecting the east with the west will soon be completed, the Hospodárske Noviny economic daily wrote.
