The Justice Ministry wants to reduce the divorce rate and prevent marriages forged with the intention of self-enrichment by introducing prenuptial agreements, said Justice Minister Štefan Harabin on August 25, after holding talks with Bratislava Metropolitan Archbishop Stanislav Zvolenský.
Opposition slams prime minister for condoning patronage

SACKED former agriculture minister Zdenka Kramplová, says she was fired for refusing to bowing to political pressure when awarding ministerial contracts. But political analysts say that even though there’s some truth in that, she still deserved to lose her job.

Falling trees kill two at festival
TWO teenagers were killed at the Hardfest in Jaslovské Bohunice on August 15 when their tents were hit by trees that fell during a storm. A third person is in a critical condition at a local hospital, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia marks 40th anniversary of Warsaw Pact invasion
GOVERNMENT representatives, social and cultural figures, and members of the general public have been marking the 40th anniversary of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact invasion of the former Czechoslovakia. Commemorations culminated on August 21, the day in 1968 when the armed forces of five Warsaw Pact countries invaded, ending the hopes of Slovaks and Czechs for the “socialism with a human face” envisioned by the communist leader at the time, Alexander Dubček.
Proximity matters

Famed actress dies, aged 101
VILMA Jam-nická, a writer, astrologer, and actress who was one of the founders of Slovak dramatic theatre, died of natural causes on August 12. She was 101.
Slota attacks NATO ally
THE SLOVAK army should be better trained. But not to deal with the threat of terrorism, or help fulfil Slovakia’s obligations as a member of NATO. Instead, according to Ján Slota, leader of the Slovak National Party (SNS), a junior member of the governing coalition, better military training is needed in order to repel a threat from Hungary.

Czech spelunkers rescued from cave
CZECH speleologists Jirka Mate and Aleš Procháska got lost in Zúgó Cave, near Kunova Teplica, in eastern Slovakia, on August 12 and couldn’t find their way out for more than 40 hours, the Nový Čas daily wrote.
