Government approves public finances deficit cut by 2.2 percent of GDP
The government at its session on August 27 approved the revision of the public finance deficit estimated for 2008 to 2.2 percent of gross domestic product (GDP) from an original estimate of 2.3 percent.

Dočolomanský, famed actor, loses bout with cancer
Michal Dočolomanský, an actor known for his roles in the films Adéla ještě nevečeřela (Adela Hasn’t Had Dinner Yet) and Tajemství hradu v Karpatech (The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians), and as folk legend Jánošík in the musical Na skle maľované (Painted on Glass), has died after an eight-month bout with lung cancer. He was 66.
Annual grain harvest expected to be 35 pct higher than last year
This year's grain harvest (wheat, rye, oats, barley, and triticale) will be 35.1 percent higher than last year, according to an August 15 estimate from the Statistics Office.
Housing real estate prices up 31.2 pct. on average in Q2

The European Commission said on August 25 that it was not ready to comment on declarations from the Slovak government concerning the possible expropriation of the country's energy monopolies as a way of keeping down energy prices.
