SMK exodus continues
THE HUNGARIAN Coalition Party (SMK) has confirmed that 46 party members from the Rimavská Sobota district quit the party on April 27. Another 55 members have suspended their membership in the party.
Forest train on the move again
AFTER a winter break, one of Slovakia’s national cultural heritages – the historical forest back swath railway based at the Museum of Kysuce in Nová Bystrica-Vychylovka – will start operating again. The launch of the seasonal operation of this unique narrow-gauge railway, one of only two railways with the back swath system in Europe, is planned for May 1.

TWO businessmen close to Vladimír Mečiar, leader of the ruling coalition Movement for a Democratic Slovakia (HZDS) party, have shown up among the largest donors of the main opposition party in Estonia, Keskerakond.
SNS nominee elected to ÚPN Board
ARPÁD Tarnóczy, the chairman of the Anti-Communist Resistance Association, was elected to the board of trustees of the Nation’s Memory Institute (ÚPN) by the Slovak parliament on April 24.
Ministry reports on crisis actions
THE FINANCE Ministry expects to reassess the public finance deficit in coming years, accelerate the drawing of EU funds, and implement huge investment projects including public-private partnership projects which might increase growth in the Slovak economy by 1.3 percent in 2009, the SITA newswire wrote, based on a report issued by the Finance Ministry on the impacts the financial and economic crisis. According to the ministry, the projected public expenditure of about €1.74 billion this year should contribute about €872 million to GDP formation. However, the inescapable basis for this scenario to become reality is successfully drawing down EU funds at the budgeted levels and starting highway construction via PPP projects at the planned scope, the report reads.

Štiavnica miner Nácko revived to warm hearts
THE FICTITIOUS character of a good-humoured miner that symbolises the life of several generations in the Štiavnica hills, and is part of the cultural heritage of Banská Štiavnica, a historic mining town in central Slovakia, was revived on April 24 for several hours to warm the hearts of story lovers.
Belgium and Denmark open markets
BELGIUM and Denmark will fully open their labour markets to citizens of Slovakia and nine other central and eastern EU countries beginning May 1. After this, only Germany and Austria within the EU will require Slovak workers to have work permits, the Sme daily wrote.
Slovakia prepares for novel flu virus
THE NOVEL flu virus, also known as swine flu, which by April 27 was thought to have killed at least 150 people in Mexico, has now appeared in Europe - but had not reached Slovakia as of April 29.
