Slovak MP seeks answers about violence against human rights protesters
Members of the governing coalition have thwarted an initiative by opposition deputy Vladimír Palko from the Christian-Democratic Party who demanded that Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák explain on Tuesday, June 23, at the ongoing plenary session of Slovak parliament why, in addition to Slovak police, members of Chinese security forces intervened against Slovak human rights demonstrators outside of the Presidential Palace on June 18, the SITA newswire reported.
Justice Minister Štefan Harabin elected president of Slovakia’s Supreme Court
Justice Minister Štefan Harabin has become the next president of Slovakia’s Supreme Court as well as head of the country’s Judicial Council after 15 members of the 17-member Judicial Council elected the nominee of the Movement for a Democratic Slovakia Party (HZDS) to the post on June 22.
SkyEurope Airline files for bankruptcy protection
Slovakia's low-cost air carrier, SkyEurope Airlines, has filed for bankruptcy protection from its creditors as the company stated in a Monday morning, June 22, press release that the Bratislava I District Court has granted its petition, the SITA newswire reported.
Quotas were sold cheaply
WEEKS after the controversial contract on emissions quotas sale was published without any details about sale price or amount, the Environment Ministry decided to publish its full text without giving any reason why it was now doing so. During the intervening period, inwhich the public had access only to the abridged version of the contract, the opposition parties and media provided various calculations and data from Slovakia’s neighbours to show that Slovakia’s sold its quotas for less than a fair price.

Men charged with Tupý murder are set free
A DISTRICT court in Bratislava on June 16 ruled that the defendants in the case of the murder of student Daniel Tupý are innocent. Richard H., who was charged with the murder, and another four men charged with causing harm to the victim were found not guilty after a trial which – according to the prosecutor – ended due to a lack of evidence, the SITA newswire reported.

500,000th car from PSA Peugeot Citroën
THE 500,000th car rolled off the assembly line at French carmaker PSA Peugeot Citroën’s Slovak plant in Trnava on June 5, the SITA newswire wrote.
A love of telling tales

The chasm widens
POLITICIANS and businesses often criticise the media for what they call its tendency to paint the prospects of countries afflicted by the economic downturn in much darker shades than the facts justify, all the while applying stirring adjectives like “dramatic”, “steep” or “massive” to the fall of economies worldwide. ECHR: Slovakia owes Lawyer Partners
THE EUROPEAN Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has delivered a written judgment in the case of Lawyer Partners, A.S. v. Slovakia on June 16. The Court held unanimously that there had been a violation of the right of access to a court established in Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights concerning the refusal by the domestic courts to register actions submitted by the applicant company in electronic form.
