Hungarian nationalists block border crossing in Komarom, Hungary
A blockade of the one lane of the road at the Slovak-Hungarian border-crossing in Komarom, Hungary by supporters of Hungarian nationalist groups Jobbik and Hungarian Guard, carried out in reaction to the ban against Hungarian President László Sólyom entering Slovakia on August 21, took place between 11:00 and 15:00 on Saturday, August 22, the TASR newswire reported.
Total reported cases of A/H1N1 flu virus in Slovakia reach 99
The week of August 17-23 week saw seven new cases of H1N1 virus or swine flu confirmed in Slovakia, bringing the total number of cases to date to 99, the Public Healthcare Authority said on its website on August 23. Four occurred in the region of Bratislava and one each in the regions of Banská Bystrica, Nitra and Trenčín. No deaths have been reported this past week or at any time since the A/H1N1 virus emerged earlier this year, the TASR newswire wrote. Between August 10 and 19, there were six cases of swine flu confirmed in connection with a sojourn to a summer camp for children (up to age 18) in Italy. The cases were registered in the regions of Banská Bystrica and Bratislava. The summer camp was ended early according to the travel agency in Bratislava which organised the trip. TASR

Slovakia’s borders were closed to Hungary’s president for a day
BILATERAL Slovak-Hungarian relations suffered a serious blow on Friday August 21 when the president of Hungary was prevented from paying an unofficial visit to the Slovak town of Komárno where he was invited by the local authorities to help unveil a statue of Hungarian King Stephen I.

Government proposes to tax poker card games
OPERATORS of gambling parlours will have to pay taxes to the state for poker-type card games beginning in 2010. The Slovak cabinet approved the revision to the law on gambling games prepared by the Finance Ministry which adds this new category of gambling, the SITA newswire reported. The revision requires that these games be operated in casinos only on the basis of an individual license. Outside formal casinos, provision of the poker games is to be conditioned on a general license.

Minister apologised to Sme journalists
JUSTICE Minister Viera Petríková apologized on August 18 for what she called a misunderstanding at the Michalovce District Court. On July 9, two reporters from the Sme daily newspaper wanted to enter the courthouse to attend a public hearing in the case of Jan P. against Petit Press, the publisher of the daily, the SITA newswire reported.

Lebanese and Hong Kong companies to invest in Slovakia
COMPANIES from Lebanon and Hong Kong plan to invest in Slovakia. The Slovak Trade Development Agency (SARIO) said that the potential investors are a Lebanese firm, Laceco International, and a Hong Kong firm, Luda Development Limited, the SITA newswire reported.
Towercom wins Slovakia’s digital broadcasting tender
TOWERCOM is the winner of Slovakia’s digital broadcasting tender and will be the operator of the first two multiplexes as well as the operator of the public service digital terrestrial broadcasting multiplex (DVB-T). The Slovak Telecommunications Office reported Towercom as the winner on August 14, after receiving a report from the selection commission on the course and result of the tender, the SITA newswire wrote.
Slovakia’s July jobless rate is highest since March 2005
THE RATE of registered unemployment in Slovakia increased by 0.26 percentage points from June and stood at 12.07 percent at the end of July, according to data released by the central office of Slovakia’s Labour, Social Affairs and Family Office and is now at the highest level since March 2005, the SITA newswire reported. Since July 2008, the jobless rate has increased by 4.6 percentage points.
Another minister out?
THE POST of agriculture minister does not seem to be suitable for long-distance runners. The current minister, Stanislav Becík, already the third during Prime Minister Fico’s government, recently made himself quite visible as he roamed through rural parts of Slovakia in a horse-pulled carriage in a quest to re-awaken farmers’ pride in their occupation. But shortly after the ride was over and the farmers’ harvests were put safely under-roof, rumours began to appear in the media that Becík might be asked to move on after just one year and pass on his post to another party nominee.

Consolidation among Slovak health insurers
HEALTH insurance companies operating in Slovakia will continue to consolidate. After the merger of the two state health insurance companies announced by Health Minister Richard Rasi in July, two private health insurance companies, Apollo and Dôvera, say they will come together too. These mergers will leave Slovakia’s health insurance market with just three insurers: one state and two private.
Economy Minister nixes a third car-scrapping bonus
THERE will be no third round of state subsidies to support the scrapping of old cars and the purchase of a new ones, Economy Minister Lubomir Jahnatek announced after the August 19 session of the Slovak cabinet, saying that a third round would not be as effective as the previous two waves, the SITA newswire reported.
New plenipotentiary for Roma communities appointed
THE CABINET has approved Ľudovít Galbavý, nominated to by Deputy Prime Minister Dušan Čaplovič, as new government plenipotentiary for Slovakia's Roma communities on August 19.

The Slovak authorities have decided to deny entry to Slovakia to Hungarian President László Sólyom on August 21, Prime Minister Robert Fico announced at an extraordinary press conference on the same day, newswire TASR reported.
Robert Fico and Gordon Bajnai discuss visit of Hungarian president to Slovakia
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his Hungarian counterpart Gordon Bajnai discussed Hungarian President László Sólyom's planned private visit to Komárno on August 21, Fico's spokesperson Silvia Glendová told newswire TASR. Sólyom was due to take part in the unveiling ceremony for a statue of Hungary's most revered monarch King Stephen I, but Fico announced shortly before the visit was due to take place that Sólyom would not be allowed to enter the country.
