Three opposition parties sign coalition agreement in Žilina Region

The regional leaders of three opposition parties: SDKU, the Christian Democrats (KDH) and the Civic Conservative Party (OKS) from Žilina Region signed an agreement on a coalition for the upcoming regional elections on August 19, the TASR newswire wrote. Cargo transport from Ukraine resumed yesterday at 18:25

Cargo transport between Slovakia and Ukraine resumed on Wednesday, August 19, at 18:25, Cargo Slovakia railways spokesperson Margareta Grecová told the TASR newswire. Ukrainian railways approved the resumption of trains moving across the border after Slovakia decided to switch off an x-ray scanning facility at Užhorod-Matovce. The state-run Ukrainian Railways stopped cargo transport via a unilateral decision at the crossing on August 17 at 7:00. The Ukrainians said the reason was that the scanner operated by Slovakia's Customs Administration allegedly poses a threat to the health of railway crew members.

Slovak unemployment rate breaks 12% threshold in July

The registered unemployment rate in Slovakia continued to grow in July, reaching a level 12.07 percent, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (UPSVaR) said on August 18, as reported by TASR. Compared to last year, July’s unemployment rate was 4.6 percentage points higher and increased by 0.26 percentage points from June.

Slovakia turns off train scanner; Ukraine to resume westward cargo transport

UKRAINE is to resume cargo transportation after 18:00 on August 19 after Slovakia agreed to turn off its x-ray scanning device at the Uzhhorod-Maťovce customs checkpoint, the use of which Slovakia’s eastern neighbour objected to by saying it caused unhealthy exposure of its railway employees to radiation. Ukraine halted its trains from moving across the border at 18:00 on August 18.
