Wulff argues for deepening of European integration
German President Christian Wulff, in Slovakia for a two-day visit, said that Slovaks earned their accession to the eurozone with their economic and financial reforms, and their tight budgetary discipline. He made the comments during a ceremonial dinner held in Bratislava on September 26, the TASR newswire reported.
Central bank lowers Slovakia’s GDP growth estimate
Amid fears of a deceleration in global economic growth, Slovakia’s economy is now expected to grow by only 3.4 percent in 2011 and by 3.8 percent in 2012, according to a lowered forecast by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS), the TASR newswire reported.
SaS remains opposed to changes in bailout mechanisms
The ruling-coalition party Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) is still refusing to support ratification of changes to the European Financial Stability Fund (EFSF) and the establishment of a permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM). Neither a new proposal from fellow coalition party the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) nor a discussion with German President Christian Wulff persuaded the party to change its opinion, the Sme daily reported.
Eurobarometer survey finds Slovaks are most positive about the EU’s single market
In general, many Europeans are satisfied with the opportunities brought by the EU’s single market but 80 percent of Slovaks believe that the EU's single market offers more job opportunities, making Slovakia the most positive country in the EU, according to a Eurobarometer survey, the SITA newswire reported.
MPs propose new amendment to Slovakia’s Citizenship Act
Slovak citizens acquiring the citizenship of another country will not lose their Slovak citizenship as of January 2012 if they have a residence permit in the country where they are applying for citizenship, according to an amendment to the State Citizenship Act proposed by MP Pavol Hrušovský of the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) and MP Jozef Mikuš from the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ), the TASR newswire reported. The amendment, which will be debated in parliament in October, is aimed at eliminating what have been called negative consequences of the law on dual-citizenship adopted during the government of former prime minister Robert Fico and to restore Slovak citizenship to people who lost it as a result of the law.
US and Slovak experts meet to counter nuclear trafficking
Slovak and US experts met in Bratislava on September 26 to discuss ways of building their cooperation in the fight against illicit trade in nuclear armaments and materials, the SITA newswire reported.
Prime Minister starts coalition talks on EU bailout mechanisms

Mobile operators' first appeal against licensing fees rejected
Slovakia’s Telecommunications Office has turned down the appeal of telecommunications operators Orange Slovensko and Slovak Telekom (T-Mobile) against the €88 million in fees they have been ordered to pay for extension of their operating licences for ten years, the SITA newswire reported.

Number of Indian tourists visiting Slovakia nearly doubles
The number of tourists from Finland, Canada and India visiting Slovakia in the first half of 2011 rose dramatically according to figures released by Slovakia’s Statistics even while the number of German visitors declined, the TASR newswire reported. The number of tourists from India increased from 758 to 1,467 in the first half of 2011 on a year-on-year basis, TASR wrote. The number of Canadian and Finnish tourists increased by more than 100 percent largely due to the ice hockey world championship that was held in Bratislava and Kosice this spring.
Germany’s president begins two-day visit to Slovakia
German President Christian Wulff arrived in Slovakia on Monday evening, September 26, for a two-day visit, with a meeting with Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič as the first item on his agenda, the TASR newswire reported. Wulff's schedule for September 27 begins with a talk with Foreign Affairs Minister Mikuláš Dzurinda, followed by meetings with Richard Sulík, chairman of Slovakia’s parliament and Prime Minister Iveta Radičová.
Nearly one-third of Slovak hospital doctors signed resignation notices
More than 2,000 doctors out of the 6,500 working in Slovakia's hospitals have handed over notices of termination of their employment contracts to the Doctors Trade Union Association (LOZ), the TASR newswire reported. "The number of resignation forms isn't final and their collection will continue into next week," said LOZ head Marián Kollár. The union plans to submit the notices to the hospitals by the end of September, he added.
American general to receive honorary citizenship of Bratislava
Major General Roy Martin Umbarger, the commander of the US National Guard in Indiana, will receive honorary citizenship of Bratislava on September 26 from Mayor Milan Ftáčnik, according to Ftáčnik’s spokesperson, Ľubomír Andrássy, the TASR newswire reported.
Interior Ministry withdraws draft amendment to the State Citizenship Act
The Interior Ministry has withdrawn a proposal for an amendment to the State Citizenship Act under which Slovaks who received Czech citizenship would not automatically forfeit their Slovak citizenship, said Ľubomíra Miklovičová from the press department at the ministry, as reported by the TASR newswire.
KIA will begin hiring 1,000 new employees
KIA Motors Slovakia will start hiring 1,000 new employees beginning on September 26 due to the production of new KIA models and the launch of three shifts per day beginning in the first quarter of 2012, the TASR newswire reported.

Tax revenues lag behind plan
SLOVAKIA collected less revenue from various kinds of taxes during the first seven months of the year than it had planned. But the gap between planned and actual tax revenues has been narrowed. While actual tax revenue was more than 12 percent less than planned in May, that narrowed to 6.4 percent in June and in July Slovakia collected tax revenue that was only 3.98 percent below the planned amount. Total tax revenue flowing to the state over the first seven months of 2011 amounted to €4.9 billion, the SITA newswire reported.
Woman football referee debuts in Trenčín match
THE FOOTBALL match between AS Trenčín and FK Dac Dunajská Streda in the 6th round of Slovakia’s top-flight Corgoň League on August 20 will be remembered for two historic moments. The first was when AS Trenčín recorded its first win, after the team, which is coached by Adrián Guľa, scored a goal in the 85th minute; it had only recorded draws in its previous matches. The more notable historic moment was the debut of Mária Súkeníková as the first woman referee supervising a match in the Corgoň League.
