Slovakia’s ice hockey team wins silver medal in IIHF championship
Though Slovakia’s national ice hockey team suffered a 6-2 defeat against Russia in the final match of the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship in Helsinki on May 20, the team greatly surpassed expectations of both fans and experts when it played for the gold, the TASR newswire reported.
Bratislava court decides for SPP in litigation over natural gas prices
The Bratislava Regional Court decided that the state did not act correctly when it twice did not allow gas utility Slovenský Plynárenský Priemysel (SPP) to increase the price of natural gas for households. The court said that the Regulatory Council issued the final decision on prices even though it was the job of the head of the Office for Regulation of Network Industries (ÚRSO), the Sme daily reported on May 19.
Pavol Frešo is elected new chair of SDKÚ at party congress
Pavol Frešo, the president of the Bratislava Self-Governing Region, was elected the new chair of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) at the party’s congress held in Zvolen on May 19. Frešo received 242 votes while his top rival, former justice minister Lucia Žitňaňská, had the support of 154 delegates in the second round of the secret ballot, the TASR newswire reported.

Commemorating Hans Christian Andersen
BIBIANA, the International House of Art for Children in Bratislava, organised a week in April to celebrate the writings of Hans Christian Andersen, the world-renowned writer of children’s books. The week from April 17 to April 22 was also part of a Danish-Slovak project that celebrated the Danish presidency of the European Union.

Cabinet re-allocates €295 million of EU funds
SLOVAKIA suffers from one of the highest youth unemployment rates in the European Union. In order to address the problem, the cabinet of Prime Minister Robert Fico has responded to an initiative launched by EC President José Manuel Barroso and proposed to re-allocate EU structural funds away from programmes such as IT and education and towards tackling youth unemployment and boosting economic growth. The plan has attracted criticism from the opposition, which is calling for a more systematic solution.
Greenpeace nuclear suit dismissed
ANTI-NUCLEAR activists from Greenpeace Slovensko have failed in their lawsuit against Slovakia’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD) regarding the finalisation of construction of the third and fourth nuclear reactors at the Mochovce power plant. The Bratislava Regional Court dismissed the organisation’s suit, the SITA newswire wrote, adding that Greenpeace will likely appeal the ruling.
The Carlton Savoy – 1913
THE CARLTON Savoy hotel in Bratislava opened in June 1913 under the ownership of Henrich Prüger. Prüger bought three buildings on Hviezdoslavovo Square: the National Hotel in 1908, the Gervaysch house in 1911 and the inn named At the Green Tree in 1912. He completely reconstructed all three buildings in 1912-1913 into a new hotel complex named the Carlton Savoy that was considered the most modern hotel of its time.

MPs approve Lisbon Treaty changes
SLOVAKIA’s parliament approved the changes to the Lisbon Treaty that establishes the European Stability Mechanism (ESM), the EU’s permanent bailout fund, during its session on May 15. The amendment to the treaty had the support of 130 out of 142 deputies present, the TASR newswire reported.

Spišiak departs, dogged by lawsuit
JAROSLAV Spišiak stood down from his job as president of the Police Corps in mid May after a busy one and a half years in which he imposed a raft of changes, including a new system to evaluate the work of police officers and oversaw the arrest of several high-profile criminals, such as members of the Piťovci and Sýkorovci organised crime groups. Despite his achievements, he now faces a lawsuit.

NKÚ completes Supreme Court audit
AN AUDIT performed by Slovakia's Supreme Audit Office (NKÚ) at the Supreme Court in April found no violations of the law or other financial problems in the court’s final financial report for 2011, the SITA newswire reported on May 11.
Court awards damages to Labsi
SLOVAKIA must pay €15,000 in compensation to Mustafa Labsi, who was deported from Slovakia to Algeria in April 2010, rules the European Court for Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg.
Record set for ‘kalamajka’ dancing
THE OLD folk dance called ‘kalamajka’ attracted 1,820 people to Freedom Square in the town of Prievidza on May 7 and they established a new Slovak record for the number of people dancing at one time. The event was held on May 7, Europe Day, and dancers expressed their approval of the country’s membership in the European Union by wearing clothing in yellow or blue, the colours of the EU.
