The STU projects, to be located in Bratislava and Trnava, are worth €42 million, with the university contributing €2 million to each and the rest being funded through the European Structural Funds and the Cohesion Fund.
State still in talks over steel mill
REPORTS last year about the potential sale of the country’s largest steelworks and one of the flagship United States investments in Slovakia to an unspecified buyer not only prompted speculation about who that buyer might be, but also prompted the Slovak government to look at possible ways to convince U.S. Steel, the current owner, to stay put. Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský confirmed on January 9 that the state is still negotiating with U.S. Steel over its ownership of the Košice steelworks, the SITA newswire reported.

President pardons prisoners
A TOTAL of 753 prisoners have been released from jail following President Ivan Gašparovič’s decision to grant a mass presidential pardon to mark the 20th anniversary of Slovak independence. Though some of those released were quickly re-apprehended after committing further crimes, Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar said that the pardon did not worsen the security situation in Slovakia, the SITA newswire reported.
TV station for men launched
CME, the provider of the most popular TV station in Slovakia, Markíza, launched a new TV station in late August. The name of the male-focused station is Dajto, which loosely translated means ‘Go for it’. This is the third TV station CME operates in Slovakia. New procurement rules debated
THE ECONOMIC and Social Council of Slovakia has expressed its support for a draft amendment to the law on public procurement prepared by Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák. However, representatives of both employees and employers agreed that before the law is discussed in parliament the tripartite will meet with Kaliňák to discuss possible changes, the SITA newswire reported on January 7.
Independent websites join forces
INDEPENDENT internet media launched Infosloboda, the Association of Independent Internet Media, in mid September. The aim of the association is to support transparency among local administration and municipal offices and the free exchange of opinions between citizens as the main tool for achieving independence, the SITA newswire wrote.
Independence day overshadowed
“WHAT Slovaks had failed to achieve over more than 1,200 years, they have achieved in 20 years,” Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič said on January 1, 2013 when marking the 20th anniversary of Slovakia’s independence. The president noted that the first 20 years of independent Slovakia make up the most significant, most dynamic and most surprising period in the history of Slovaks. The anniversary also brought a presidential pardon for 753 prisoners in Slovakia – and unlike in the Czech Republic, where the president pardoned about 7,400 prisoners, including some who committed serious economic crimes in the mid 1990s, the act did not result in such fiery public debate.
Zemko: Break-up was a good decision
SLOVAKIA is a state younger than most of its inhabitants. Its 20-year-long history has been eventful, at times a source of pride, but often also cause for concern or even shame. Has Slovakia been writing a success story overall? Was the Czecho-Slovak divorce the right decision? What about all the what-ifs that it left unanswered? The Slovak Spectator put these questions to Milan Zemko, a historian from the Historical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences.

The future of online advertising?
IT IS not news that advertising revenues in print media continue to decline. Exact aggregate data for 2012 are not yet available, but so far the figures do not indicate any surprising reversals in this respect. The increasing number of tablets, smartphones and other online devices makes online advertising more appealing, while the economic crisis forcing companies to cut costs may actually help this area develop further.
1993-2013: Shame and pride
“THE STATE can be neither better nor worse than we ourselves are,” Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič stated in his New Year address, marking the 20th anniversary of Slovakia’s independence. Yet shortly after making this comment the president announced that he would not appoint Jozef Čentéš to the post of general prosecutor, despite him having been elected by parliament for the post on June 7, 2011 and the Constitutional Court subsequently confirming the legitimacy of the parliamentary ballot by which he was chosen.
