Stat's Office: Year-on-year inflation at 3.2 percent in December 2012
Year-on-year inflation reached 3.2 percent in December 2012, with core inflation standing at 3 percent and net inflation at 2.3 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) reported on Monday, January 14.
Paška to summon special session on Čentéš; Gašparovič will not attend
Speaker of parliament Pavol Paška will summon a special parliamentary session to discuss President Ivan Gašparovič’s refusal to appoint general-prosecutor-elect Jozef Čentéš. It will take place on Wednesday, January 16 at 11 am, the TASR newswire reported.
President ratifies fiscal treaty
President Ivan Gašparovič has ratified a fiscal treaty of the European Union, which will set new rules and limitations in the budgetary area of the Union’s member states, the SITA newswire reported on January 11.
Investigators launch criminal proceeding in case mentioned in Gorilla file
Investigators of the Gorilla scandal have initiated a criminal proceeding in a case of blackmail, TV Markíza informed in its evening news programme broadcast on January 13, adding that the case may be related to the sale of Bratislava airport during the second government of Mikuláš Dzurinda (2002-06), the TASR newswire wrote.
Number of flu cases doubled
The second calendar week of January has seen a significant increase in the number of people with acute respiratory illness. On a weekly basis, the number of reported cases rose by 48 percent, the TASR newswire reported on January 11.

The ongoing push to monetise online content
REVENUES from print media advertising are continuing to shrink and publishers are still looking for ways to get readers to pay for the online content they consume. Slovakia was the first country to witness the launch of a national online subscription-based content payment system, Piano Media, which encompasses a broad range of media publishers, including The Slovak Spectator. But individual media outlets are also trying out other schemes.
Harabin hospitalised
SUPREME Court President Štefan Harabin was admitted to hospital in Vienna on January 8 after falling unconscious at Vienna International Airport shortly before a flight to Chile, where he had planned to attend a conference. As he was getting on the plane he collapsed, in the process suffering several injuries, the Čas.sk news website reported.

Judges assigned; Čentéš objects
WHILE politicians argued over how to debate the decision of President Ivan Gašparovič not to appoint Jozef Čentéš to the top prosecutor’s job, the Constitutional Court assigned the complaint Čentéš had filed against the president’s decision to a panel of judges. Čentéš has already objected to its composition, the SITA newswire reported on January 9.

Nuke plan prepared
MANY COUNTRIES have taken heed of the lessons learned when, in March 2011, Japan’s Fukushima nuclear power plant experienced multiple meltdowns in the aftermath of an earthquake and tsunami, and Slovakia is no exception. After carrying out stress tests on nuclear power plants that are in operation as well as under construction, Slovakia produced the National Action Plan regarding steps taken to comply with the conclusions of the stress tests. Slovakia’s Nuclear Regulatory Authority (ÚJD) sent the plan to the European Nuclear Safety Regulators’ Group (ENSREG) in early January.
Burda chalet fire under investigation
THE BURDA tourist information centre in the Muránska Planina (Muráň Plain) National Park burned down on November 2, 2012. Zdeněk Pochop, the caretaker of the chalet, which was also used to accommodate tourists, told the TASR newswire that he believes the fire was probably started deliberately by an unknown perpetrator and that the damage amounts to more than €80,000.
Košice's big year begins
THE SLOVAK city of Košice has become, together with the French city of Marseilles, the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2013. A year-long series of events will officially be launched over the weekend of January 19 and 20 in Košice.
Radičová leaves for Oxford
FORMER prime minister Iveta Radičová has left Bratislava to work as a visiting professor at Oxford University for one trimester. She will be part of an international team analysing relations between politics and the media and also politics and democracy. The team will analyse the state of the media in Europe as well as beyond. Radičová and the team will also analyse the digitalisation of society, since this has brought significant changes in how information is processed, the SITA newswire wrote.
Special tram marked Xmas in capital
A VINTAGE tram operated in downtown Bratislava between December 10 and 23 to mark Christmas. Covered in Christmas-themed decorations inside and out, its route went from Vazovova Street through Krížna, Špitálska, Jesenského, Šafárikovo Square, SNP Square and back through Obchodná and Radlinského.
Survey: Towns more transparent
THOUGH Slovak municipalities now publish more documents pertaining to their activities on their websites than two years ago, they still struggle to report on the sale of municipal property and selection procedures for certain jobs. These are some of the results of the Open Municipality 2012 list compiled in mid December 2012 by political ethics watchdog Transparency International Slovensko (TIS).
