TIS: Slovakia earned ‘C’ grade in defence ministry transparency evaluation

The British branch of the Transparency International watchdog made its historically first evaluation of transparency and corruption risks of defence ministries in 82 countries worldwide, within the programme focused on defence and security. It evaluated this sphere mainly due to the fact that corruption in defence is a crucial issue of national and global security.

Košice-based firm created unique mobile app for National Geographic

The Košice branch of the firm Ixonos has developed a special mobile application consisting of the full encyclopaedic and illustrated publication of bird species found mainly in North America. The firm spent eight months working on the project, the Hospodárske noviny daily wrote in its Tuesday, January 29 issue.

Pravda: Cost cutting led to D1 highway bridge collapse

The Pravda daily quoted experts as saying that last November’s fatal collapse of the D1 highway bridge in Prešov Region (near the municipality of Kurimany) occurred as a result of efforts to save €10,000 on the construction of the bridge’s support frame. Experts have proven that cutting costs led to defects in the support frame, which caused the bridge to collapse, killing four workers.

NATO exercise reveals flaws in national communications system

The national communications security system, as part of the NATO Global Communication System (NGCS), has shortcomings, according to the results of a CMX 12 Crisis Management Exercise conducted in November 2012 in which Slovakia participated. The CMX 12 exercise was prepared, coordinated and evaluated by NATO International Staff, which in Slovakia was made up of the Interior Ministry, the Defence Ministry, the Government Office and the Slovak Intelligence Service. The report on the CMX 12 results was acknowledged by the Government this week.

Poll: Most Slovaks want better-paid teachers and stricter measures against Roma

The Slovak public approves of teachers' demands for higher salaries, but is more reserved when it comes to the requirements of doctors, according to a poll carried out by the Public Affairs Institute (IVO) in cooperation with Focus agency at the beginning of November 2012, and published on Monday, January 28. Around 60 percent of the 1,013 respondents view the pressure imposed by teachers on the Government last year as appropriate, while one-third of them did not. Almost half of the Slovaks approached support the demands of doctors and nurses for higher salaries, while around 44 percent are against them. Among other things, the poll also focused on Roma issues, asking people about their stances on more stringent measures that might be taken against the Roma.

Civil activists, in collaboration with the Human Rights Institute, launched the Slovak version of WikiLeaks to mark the first anniversary of the Gorilla protest. Radoslav Procházka, an MP for the Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), announced that he will never run again in any election on the party’s slate.
