Lipšic’s NOVA party placed highest among opposition in MVK poll
If parliamentary elections took place in January, the strongest opposition movement in parliament would be the new Nova Väčšina, or NOVA party of Daniel Lipšic – which would garner 8.9 percent of the vote. The TASR newswire reported this from a poll of the MVK polling agency conducted between January 7 and 13 on 1,125 respondents.
Serbian president to meet top Slovak officials Tuesday
Serbian President Tomislav Nikolic is scheduled meet Slovakia's top officials during his trip to the country on Tuesday, January 22, the TASR newswire learned from the Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič's press department.
Average senior pension in Slovakia in 2012 was €375.9
The average pension for seniors in Slovakia at the end of last year was €375.9. Compared with the end of 2011, this shows an €13.8 increase. At the end of last month, nearly 980,900 Slovak citizens out of over 5.5 million lived on this type of income.
Slovak detained in Iran, accused of spying for CIA
Slovak media reported on Monday, January 21, that a Slovak citizen was detained in Iran for allegedly having spied for the US intelligence service, the CIA. The Slovak Foreign Ministry confirmed for the private TV Markíza that last week, a Slovak citizen was arrested in Tehran. The ministry asked the Iranian side for an explanation, but so far has received no response, according to the www.topky.sk news-portal.
ÚPSVaR: Unemployment rate at 14.44 percent in December
The unemployment rate in Slovakia rose by 0.85 percentage points year-on-year in December to reach 14.44 percent, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) reported on Monday, January 21. Meanwhile, unemployment went up by 0.25 percentage points on a monthly basis.
Vašečka wants president's whereabouts during fatal hunting shoot
Ordinary People and Independent Personalities (OĽaNO) MP Richard Vašečka has called on Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák to present a report on President Ivan Gašparovič's whereabouts during the summer of 2009, when forester Michal Bobák was shot dead in a hunting accident.

Slovak and Hungarian officials participated in a wreath-laying memorial ceremony in the Hungarian village of Hejce, where 42 Slovak soldiers died in a tragic military aircraft crash on January 19, 2006.
Less public tender competition under Fico, TIS report states
A public procurement analysis prepared by the ethics watch dog Transparency International Slovakia shows that after Robert Fico and his government were appointed, the number of bidders in public tenders, as well as the average in savings in the bids, dropped. On the other hand, the number of transparent bidding competitions increased, but only slightly, the Sme daily reported on January 19.

The police have stopped the criminal prosecution of filmmaker Zuzana Piussi for an alleged violation of confidentiality of verbal expression in a private conversation, the SITA newswire reported on January 18.
Eurostat: Youth unemployment rate in Slovakia is 5th highest in EU
The jobless rate among young people in Slovakia was the fifth highest in the European Union in November 2012 when one in three Slovaks under the age of 25 was without work, according to data presented by the Eurostat statistics office.

The police have launched an investigation into a violent acid attack that occurred in front of the Bratislava II District Court in Bratislava on Friday, January 18, the TASR newswire reported.
Teachers seek additional salary hike
TEACHERS’ unions are demanding that the government introduces salary increases for teachers and other school employees by another 5 percent as of July 1, 2013, otherwise protests and their strike are likely to resume, the TASR newswire reported on January 16.
Halušky sent (almost) into space
TRACKING devices, mini HD cameras, bryndzové halušky and an issue of the Sme daily are some of things participants in a Slovak engineering project placed into their special STS-2 module, which they sent up into the stratosphere on January 15. The purpose of this project, called “Sme v stratosphere” and run by a group of radio amateurs and the Sme daily, was to take unique shots of Slovakia and space and send them back to Earth. The project is intended to propagate science and the work of young engineers as well as to educate the public about why the stratosphere is important for our planet.
Mostly Slovaks and Russians visited Tatras in high season
The prolonged so-called “Golden Week” – the peak period from Christmas to approximately January 13 – was satisfactory this time in the High Tatras, local tourist boards and travel agencies agree. Preliminary estimates show a 5-percent increase against last year. Most visitors - up to 55 percent - were locals, followed by tourists from Russia and Ukraine.

NEITHER the scheduled performance by British jazz funk band Jamiroquai nor the various other attractions organised throughout Košice for the opening of the European Capital of Culture (ECOC) 2013 prompted as much debate as the inclusion in the event line-up of Slovak amateur singer Anna Gaja, the wife of Marián Gaja, mayor of the Košice borough of Sever.

Košice's year as European culture capital begins
EVEN though 2013 began almost three weeks ago, Košice held its main celebration during the weekend of January 19-20 to start off its year as the European Capital of Culture. The opening ceremony consisted of about 200 events featuring around 1,000 performers, with the ceremonial lightening of St Elizabeth’s Cathedral in Košice’s city centre as the climax of the Saturday programme and British band Jamiroquai as the main star of the two-day event.
Cabinet approves changes to aid rules
THE SLOVAK government is tightening the rules for providing both domestic and foreign investors with state incentives. The move comes just weeks after it approved state aid exceeding €121 million, part of which went to companies that did not promise to create new jobs, but promised merely to preserve existing ones. The cabinet agreed on the new legislation on January 9; parliament must now approve the revision for it to take effect from April.
Moody’s: Cutting deficit will be hard
CONSOLIDATION of the public finances as projected in the state budget for 2013 might not be sufficient to cut the deficit below 3 percent of Slovakia’s GDP, according to Moody’s rating agency, as reported by the Hospodárske Noviny daily on January 10.
