Slovak unemployment rate rises to almost 15 percent
The unemployment rate in Slovakia rose 0.36 percentage points percent month-on-month to reach 14.80 percent in January, according to data released Wednesday by the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR). When compared to the figure in January 2012, the latest figure represents a year-on-year increase of 1.11 percentage points.
Car sales in Europe plummet; Slovakia also affected
Sales of cars in the European Union in January fell to their lowest level since 1990, when car-sales data first started to be released, the Sme daily reported on Wednesday, February 19.
UNDP survey will show how Roma minority lives in Slovak towns
A joint survey carried out by the Association of Towns and Villages of Slovakia (ZMOS) and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) aims to determine how members of the Roma minority live in approximately one-third of Slovak towns and villages. The survey contacted more than 1,060 towns and villages with a higher concentration of marginalised Roma citizens. This is more than one-third of the total of 2,928 municipalities that are ZMOS members, its spokesperson Marta Bujňáková told the SITA newswire.

Unemployment rate hits new high
THE LEGION of Slovakia’s unemployed swelled to almost 15 percent in January, the highest level since 2004. The government of Robert Fico blames the gloomy numbers on the slowing wheels of the economy, while the opposition blames the government for measures that it says negatively affect the flexibility of the labour market, including the recently revised Labour Code.
Harabin's opponent wants to be his deputy
One of the toughest critics of Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin, Judge Peter Paluda, wants to compete in May for the post of his deputy. He had already run in the past but he gave up his candidacy shortly before the race, the Sme daily wrote in its Wednesday, February 20, issue.
Murderer of former VÚJE head Ján Korec lands 14.5-year sentence
A 14.5-year prison sentence has been handed down 12 years after the murder of Ján Korec, the former head of the Research Institute of Nuclear Power Plants in Trnava. His murderer, Ivan Gombík (aged 44), waited for his victim on February 23, 2001, and shot him 30 times. He received Sk100,000 in reward for the killing.
Banská Bystrica: Woman with swine flu dies in hospital
A female patient who contracted swine flu and was admitted to a hospital in Banská Bystrica on February 4 has died, the TASR newswire was told by spokesman of the F.D. Roosevelt Hospital Ružena Maťašeje on Tuesday, February 19.
D1 motorway near Levoča to be completed 6-8 months late
The construction of the D1 motorway stretch near Levoča, a part of which consists of the collapsed road bridge near the villages of Kurimany and Iliašovce in the Prešov region, will take six to eight months longer than planned to complete as a result of the accident, said National Highway Company (NDS) investment director Viktória Chomová on Tuesday, February 19.
Gašparovič files objections to three more judges
President Ivan Gašparovič has filed an objection to all three of the Constitutional Court justices who are currently slated to judge an earlier complaint he submitted regarding the composition of the court senate that will assess whether his refusal to appoint Jozef Čentéš, elected to the post of general prosecutor by parliament, is legal, the Sme daily reported on February 19.
One third of Gorilla investigation team will change
The composition of the team of investigators which is dealing with the Gorilla file will change after its head Marek Gajdoš asked Police Corps President Tibor Gašpar to replace five of its 16 current members, the Sme daily reported on February 20.
Cooperation between Slovakia and Hungary has improved, say presidents
Though there are still some issues on which Slovakia and Hungary have differences of opinion, cooperation between the two countries has improved during the past year, according to Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič and his Hungarian counterpart János Áder, who met in Hungary on February 19. The presidents agreed to create a list of disputed issues which will be discussed by expert groups, the SITA newswire reported.
Slovak highway construction averages less than 14 kilometres per year
Slovakia has completed only one third of the 1,864 kilometres of highways and expressways planned for construction 45 years ago, according to data from the National Highway Company (NDS). This means that, on average, only 13.6 kilometres of roads have been built each year, the TASR newswire reported on February 19.
Volume of fake goods seized in Slovakia up 20 percent in 2012
Slovak customs offices seized more than 310,000 items defined as forged goods in 2012, an increase of around 20 percent year-on-year, general director of the Financial Directorate's Tax and Customs Section Daniel Čech said at a press conference on Monday, February 18.

The Public Procurement Office (ÚVO) halted a tender at the Interior Ministry worth €720,000 (with VAT) for preferential treatment of one of the bidders, the aktualne.sk news website reported on Saturday, February 16.
President Ivan Gašparovič makes official visit to Budapest
Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič is leaving on Tuesday, February 19, for a two-day state visit to Hungary. This will be the first official visit of the Slovak president to Budapest after nine years, the SITA newswire wrote.
Comenius University ranked first in employment rate of post-graduate graduates
In a chart of global universities with the lowest unemployment rate of post-graduate study graduates, the Comenius University in Bratislava ranks first place along with 23 other universities, the TASR newswire was informed by Andrea Kučerová of the press department.
Thieves from abroad steal money from Slovaks via bank accounts
Several clients of various banks in Slovakia have had money stolen from their accounts in recent days, with the thieves using a method known as skimming, the TASR newswire learned on Monday, February 18. Skimming involves implanting special devices on cash-points (ATMs) designed to read data from credit/debit cards and transfer it to the thieves.
ARDAL sells government bonds worth €430.2 million
The State Debt and Liquidity Management Agency (ARDAL) sold government bonds worth €430.2 million at an auction on Monday, February 18, including three-year bonds worth €255.2 million and four-year bonds worth €175 million, ARDAL's Juraj Pekár told the TASR newswire on the same day.
Lajčák: We will send humanitarian aid, rather than military personnel, to Mali for now
Slovakia is not represented in the EU's EUTM training mission to Mali for the time being, although it is ready to send experts within further rotations, Slovak Foreign and European Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák told the TASR newswire after a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday, February 18.
