A Slovak soldier who suffered serious injuries after being shot in the chest in a recent attack at the Kandahar military base in Afghanistan is to undergo further surgery, Slovak Armed Forces spokesperson Milan Vanga told the TASR newswire on Thursday, July 18.
Classic play to be performed in English in Bratislava
Theatrical performances in English are due to take place in Bratislava soon, with the Bridgin' Drama theatre set to put on the comedy Tajovsky Ruulezz! at the Zichy Palace seven times over the summer, starting today, Friday July 19, theatre press manager Michaela Vrabová announced.
Ftáčnik criticised for taking paid position at private insurance company
Bratislava mayor Milan Ftáčnik should explain at once his decision to take a paid position on the supervisory board of Komunálna Poisťovňa, a private insurance company, Ivo Nesrovnal, the head of the Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) and Most-Híd caucus on Bratislava City Council, said on Thursday, July 18.
Kia Motors Slovakia's output up 6 percent in first half of 2013
The output of the Kia Motors Slovakia plant in Teplička nad Váhom increased by 6 percent year-on-year to 158,900 cars in the first half of 2013, Kia Motors Slovakia spokesman Jozef Bačé said at a press conference on Thursday, July 18.

Transport Ministry proposes new construction law
The Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development on July 18 introduced a new draft law on construction, and invited public submissions on it. The aim of the draft amendment is to remove what the ministry calls ‘chaos’ from urban planning, improve decision-making to make it more effective, and to make construction offices more professional.
Bezák rejects Bishops’ Conference offer of financial support
The former archbishop of Trnava, Róbert Bezák, who was controversially removed from office last year, has refused an offer from the Conference of Bishops of Slovakia (KBS) to provide him with financial security. KBS secretary Anton Ziolkovský told the SITA newswire on Thursday, July 18 that the secretary-general of the KBS, Marián Chovanec, had met Bezák to tell him of the bishops’ offer.
Poll: Most Slovaks don’t believe Gorilla case will be investigated
Most Slovaks are convinced that prosecutors will not succeed in investigating the Gorilla case – the case involving an alleged intelligence service document pertaining to purported secret deals between top Slovak politicians and businessmen. In a poll by the MVK agency more than 40 percent of respondents said they firmly believed the investigation would fail, while 33.6 percent thought that it would probably not succeed.
Poland, Romania enter project linking electricity markets
Romania and Poland are closer to linking their daily electricity markets with the markets of Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. All the countries involved signed a memorandum which should lead to Romania and Poland joining the daily integrated electricity market created by the so-called Market Coupling project to connect European electricity markets.
Slovak soldiers leave Uruzgan province in Afghanistan
The near-six-year operation by soldiers of the Slovak armed forces in the Afghan province of Uruzgan came to an end on July 14 when they left from Tarin Kowt base.
Fitch downgrades Slovenské Elektrárne credit rating
International rating agency Fitch on July 16 downgraded Slovenské Elektrárne’s (SE) long-term issuer default rating (IDR) and senior unsecured rating to 'BBB-' from 'BBB'. The outlook is negative.
Health information authority: STD cases rise in Slovakia
Slovakia saw 1,142 recorded cases of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in 2012, amounting to a year-on-year rise of 105 cases, the National Centre for Health Information (NCZI) spokesman Peter Bubla said on July 16.
EP: Decommissioning of Jaslovské Bohunice may face €130 million shortfall
It appears likely that the decommissioning of the Jaslovské Bohunice V1 nuclear power plant will require an additional €130 million, the European Parliament’s Committee for Budget Supervision delegation chair Jens Geier said at a press conference held in Bratislava on Tuesday, July 16. The delegation visited Slovakia between July 15 and 16 to assess the progress of the decommissioning.
Men who shot Austrian with Slovak business ties remain at large
A 49-year-old Austrian man who was shot on July 15 on the A4 Austrian highway, close to the Vienna-Schwechat international airport, is of Georgian origin and lives in Vienna, the TASR newswire wrote. He was heading to Vienna from Slovakia in a Mercedes with a Slovak license plate when he was forced by his assailants to pull over, after which they shot him.
Poll: Most people believe Fico will run for president
Most people in Slovakia believe that Prime Minister Robert Fico will run in the presidential elections in the spring of 2014, with 25.1 percent in a recent MVK agency survey stating that he will definitely run.
President appoints Čižnár as top prosecutor
President Ivan Gašparovič has appointed Jaromír Čižnár, a former law-school classmate of Prime Minister Robert Fico, as Slovakia’s general prosecutor, the TASR newswire reported. The president’s office did not formally inform the media about the appointment in advance.
Sme: Suchodolinský will be heard
The investigator of the National Criminal Agency reportedly wants to hear the testimony of Vladimír Suchodolinský, the purported author of a report on alleged embezzlement at the Military Defence Intelligence (VSS) during the period of the first Fico government (2006-2010). Suchodolinský confirmed to the Sme daily that he had spoken by phone to the investigator.
E.ON to halt production at Malženice steam-gas power plant in October
A state-of-the-art steam-gas power plant in Malženice, Trnava Region, will halt production in October 2013 as a result of low electricity prices and disruption in the market for emissions trading. The operator of the power plant, the German energy firm E.ON, plans to mothball it, the SITA newswire reported on July 16.
