V4 agrees on defence, nuclear energy
THE VISEGRAD Group (V4) countries will have their own joint combat unit in 2016, according to an agreement made by the prime ministers of Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland, at the meeting held in Budapest on October 14. The PMs also discussed the importance of nuclear energy for the European economy, the TASR newswire reported.
224 Slovak tourists died abroad during summer
UP TO 224 Slovaks died abroad during their summer holidays, most of whom perished in the Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia. In addition to this, 167 people were injured, mostly on holidays in Croatia, Italy and Austria, according to the Foreign Affairs Ministry data.

Police halt inquiry into hazy emissions deal
NOBODY will go to jail in association with one of the most controversial deals sealed under the first government of Prime Minister Robert Fico, as police have shelved their investigation into the infamous Interblue Group case. Slovak taxpayers are believed to have lost tens of millions of euros in the deal, in which the Interblue Group – a company registered to an unattended lock-up garage in the United States – acquired Slovakia’s carbon-dioxide emissions quotas at a huge discount. One political ethics watchdog group called the shelving of the investigation “bad news” but in no way surprising.

THE USUAL way to deal with counterfeit goods confiscated by custom offices is for owners to pay for their disposal, but there are also special cases when the customs offices can donate the items for humanitarian purposes. Until now, that has required approval from the firm that owns the original trademark, but the Finance Ministry is proposing to do away with that limitation.
Smart electric energy metering
SLOVAKIA is gradually preparing for the installation of smart meters in the electricity sector. In early July the Slovak cabinet approved a concept for how to proceed in this area. The Economy Ministry, which developed the concept, envisages that by 2020, 600,000 smart meters should be installed in Slovakia, the SITA newswire wrote.

AN EAGLE called Ar-nold, fitted with a solar transmitter enabling experts and the general public to track his whereabouts, entered the warzone in Syria in late September as part of his migratory route to Africa, where he spends his winters.
€47m earned from CO2 allowances
SLOVAKIA has sold emissions allowances, known as EUAs (European Union allowances), worth €47 million so far this year, permitting the buyers to emit 10.863 million tonnes of CO2 emissions. This comes out to an average price of €4.33 per tonne, Environment Ministry spokesperson Maroš Stano told the SITA newswire.
More RES power plants in Tatras
THE MAJOR electricity producer Slovenské Elektrárne is continuing its construction of small power stations based on renewable energy sources (RES) in the High Tatras. Within the Ecologisation of Mountain Chalets project, it has already invested €110,000 into construction of solar or small hydro-power plants, the SITA newswire wrote.
