Regional airport needs money
THE TRANSPORT Ministry lacks the money to operate regional airports in the cabinet-approved state budget for 2014, and is currently contemplating closing some of them, but hopes this will not be necessary, the SITA newswire wrote on October 14.
‘Cross-border’ stork suspected of espionage released in Egypt
THE WHITE stork called Méneš, who was marked with a tracking device within the joint Hungarian-Slovak project Vtáky bez hraníc (Birds Without Borders) on the Hungarian side of the Ipeľ river near Szécsény, was caught in Egypt on suspicions of espionage and kept in captivity for several days. At the end of August Hungarian ornithologists received news of Méneš’ capture in Egypt, and after several days of negotiations with Egyptian authorities and ornithologists, the bird was released, Ján Gúgh of the SOS/Birdlife organisation informed the SITA newswire. Méneš’s trip started in mid August, when he also visited Slovakia near the municipality of Kováčovce, and continued through Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, Syria, Jordan and Israel, and after having crossed the Sinai peninsula, he flew 3,700 kilometres, all the way to the Nile valley.
Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava attracts many
THE BIENNIAL event that started as a way out of a dire situation under communism, is now in its 24th year, and in addition to the main international competition of illustrators of children’s books at the House of Art in Bratislava’s SNP Square, it includes a host of other events, exhibitions and discussions, as well as a UNESCO workshop by Albín Brunovský in the Mojmírovce mansion.
Swoboda: Wall does not segregate
THE WALL that separates Košice’s infamous Roma neighbourhood Lunik IX from neighbouring housing estates does not divide the town into two sections, according to the chair of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda.
Slovaks part of Nobel Peace Prize
THIS YEAR’S Nobel Peace Prize came as a surprise for many as the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) – an organisation rarely in the headlines – for its “extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons” on October 11. A trio of Slovaks are among those being honoured.
Harmonised inflation down to 1.1%
CONSUMER prices grew slower in the Slovak economy than the EU average in both year-on-year and month-on-month comparisons.
Rise in cargo transport expected
SLIMMED-down fleets of road cargo transporters might not be enough to satisfy an expected increase in demand fuelled by the revival of the economy in 2014. As a consequence this might bring higher prices in transport. This is one of the findings of a survey which DKV Euro Services conducted among directors of European branches of transporters. Eight directors managing branches of transport companies in 15 European countries participated in the survey in early summer 2013, the TASR newswire wrote.
Cabinet wants tramcar back
THE ROBERT Fico cabinet would like to see the tramcar connecting Trenčianska Teplá and Trenčianske Teplice back in operation, a wish echoed by ministers in a special cabinet session in nearby Handlová earlier in October.
Slovak Telekom to end up in private hands
THE STATE will sell its minority share in Slovak Telekom (ST), but not this year, said Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský after the October 16 government session. He added that the working group is currently dealing with comments to the memorandum, which will specify the conditions of the sale, including individual steps and a time schedule, the TASR newswire reported.

New terminal opens in Pezinok
A NEW terminal for passenger integrated transport was put into operation in Pezinok in early September. The €428,000-terminal should help passengers to travel in the region more easily.
Companies expect worse results
MOST companies in Slovakia anticipate worse economic results this year than in 2012. While up to 36 percent of the 150 firms that participated in the Leadership Barometer 2013 Slovakia survey conducted by GfK selected this possibility, one quarter of respondents said they expect better results, and about one third predicted their results will be the same as last year, the TASR newswire reported.
Changes to electronic toll collection
FOUR YEARS since its launch the state will revamp its electronic toll collection system to extend the network of tolled roads, push trucks away from regional routes and incentivise more environment-friendly vehicles.
Mayors threaten to strike over taxes
MUNICIPAL governments are threatening to go on strike unless the central government allocates more money to towns and villages from next year’s budget. The Slovak Association of Towns and Villages (ZMOS) is demanding the government to increase its share of the national personal income tax from 65.4 percent to 70.3 percent, the Sme daily reported.

Slovakia nears top of air pollution
A STUDY on air pollution recently published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) shows that nine out of 10 Europeans are breathing bad air, with Slovakia having some of the most polluted air among EU countries, the Sme daily reported on its website.
