VOP Nováky shaken by another blast, one person seriously injured
In the latest in a series of such incidents, a 36-year-old man was injured in a grenade blast at a shooting range at the Military Maintenance Company (Vojenský opravárenský podnik-VOP) in Nováky on October 22 morning. The man was admitted to the hospital in Bojnice in a serious condition, with injuries to his abdomen, head and arm, said Boris Chmel, spokesman for the Operational Centre of the Emergency Health Service, according to TASR newswire.

State bought software licences from Oracle through third party
ORGANISATIONS running under the Finance Ministry and social insurer Sociálna Poisťovňa paid altogether €8 million for additional software licenses from Oracle to a company called Indexer, which was selected by Oracle to serve as a middleman without any competition, even though it was not the only company that could sell such licenses.
Košice school to face another inspection
THE KOŠICE Self-Governing Region will conduct another inspection of the Business Academy on Polárna Street in Košice, the regional deputies agreed at their October 21 session. The inspection will look into the allegations of a former teacher, Oto Žarnay, who blew the whistle on non-transparent spending and nepotism back in May. Žarnay lost his job in September, allegedly due to organisational reasons, the SITA newswire reported.
Bar association will not punish Macejka
LAWYER and husband of Constitutional Court President Ivetta Macejková, Ľubomír Macejka, will not receive punishment for a letter he addressed to Jozef Čentéš in which he repeatedly insulted Čentéš. According to the Slovak Bar Association, the letter is not a disciplinary transgression. If it was, Macejka would be threatened with admonition or removal from the list of lawyers, the Sme daily reported on October 22.
First container school in Jarovnice opens
CHILDREN from Jarovnice, a village in the Sabinov district with the biggest Roma community in Slovakia, will attend the first finished modular school, opened on October 21. It is a container school with eight classrooms and a capacity for about 25 children. The pupils will learn there in two shifts, the SITA newswire reported.
SDKÚ has paid off its debt
THE SLOVAK Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) has reduced its debt after making an agreement with its former treasurer, Igor Kucej, on the mutual settlement of receivables. Kucej lent the party €618,000 when he served as a treasurer. This debt was settled after he accepted the responsibility for the damage to the party caused by its former accountant.
Kamenné Square sale postponed after citizens protest
THE BRATISLAVA municipal council will probably not sell Kamenné Square, one of the capital’s central public squares, to a British investor as quickly as it intended to.
Slovak man dies in the UK
A YOUNG Slovak man was killed in a fish-processing factory in the town of Plymouth, in the UK, on the evening of October 18.
Unemployment up in September
SLOVAKIA’s unemployment rate in September grew by 0.14 percentage points month-on-month and by 0.40 percentage points year-on-year to stand at 13.84 percent, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) announced, as reported by the TASR newswire.

PRISON guards in a Košice prison were found to have been humiliating several of the inmates they were responsible for.
Fico meets with Gazprom chairman
SLOVAK Prime Minister Robert Fico met with Alexey Miller, head of the board of directors of Russian gas company Gazprom. Yet, only the Russian firm has informed about the meeting.
Bratislava to sell Kamenné Square
BRATISLAVA municipal deputies will probably decide over the sale of Kamenné Square, located near the town’s centre, on October 24. The possible buyer, British developer Lordship Real Estate, has offered more than €1.758 million. The firm plans to revitalise the square, the TASR newswire reported on October 18.
Matica Slovenská re-elects Tkáč as its chair
MARIÁN Tkáč will remain head of Matica Slovenská, Slovakia’s national cultural heritage and research institution, for another four years. He received support from 254 delegates in the vote held on October 18, the SITA newswire reported.

SLOVAKIA sent a humanitarian aid to Bulgaria. The country has asked the European Union for help after it reported an increase in the number of illegal immigrants, especially from Syria.

WHILE business tycoon of Slovak origin Andrej Babiš continues to insist that he did not knowingly cooperate with the communist-era secret service, the ŠtB, and that his file is fictitious and purposefully made up, the archives of the Nation’s Memory Institute (ÚPN) show the opposite. The Sme daily reported in its October 19 issue that it has acquired the so-called Eye file, which was created by the ŠtB in 1982.
