Building of industrial space reflects economy
SLOVAKIA’S industrial space market has the lowest vacancy rate in central Europe. Market watchers say this rate reflects the current economic situation and high competition in the region, and believe prospects are good for building new industrial space along highways around Žilina and Košice.
UN condemns Moldava raid
MOLDAVA NAD BODVOU – The United Nations is the latest organisation to officially condemn a violent police raid on a Roma settlement outside the eastern city of Moldava nad Bodvou in June, but the biggest criticisms remain with the continued failure of state authorities to fully investigate allegations of police brutality, illegal detention and excessive use of force.
New logistics terminal in Strečno
THE DB SCHENKER company opened a new 3,000 square metre logistics terminal in Strečno, near Žilina, in late June. This will enable the company to create new infrastructure and modernise its existing infrastructure, the company’s general director, Dietmar Smickl, said during the ceremony, the TASR newswire wrote.
Smer delays presidential election talk
WILL he or won’t he? At the moment, the question that matters to the Slovak public whenever the presidential election is mentioned is whether Prime Minister Robert Fico will throw his hat into the ring. Much like other political parties, Fico’s Smer have put off strategising for the presidential vote until after next month’s regional elections.

NGOs seek detailed property info
PUBLIC property declarations need to be more detailed in order to achieve better transparency, a group of non-governmental organisations has written in an open letter to Slovak MPs, calling on them to support the opposition draft amendment to the constitutional law on the protection of public interest.Under the amendment, the directors of the public-service broadcaster RTVS, the state-run social insurer Sociálna Poisťovňa, the Land Property Fund, the president of the Police Corps and state representatives in companies where the state is the majority owner, should all be required to submit property returns.
Cargo Slovakia to reorganise
THE STATE-owned railway freight company, Železničná Spoločnosť Cargo Slovakia (ZSSK Cargo), will spin its auxiliary activities off into subsidiaries to make its operation more effective, reduce its debt and increase competitiveness.
Raspberry angers Gov't Office spokesperson
WHILE the Association of Spokespersons of Slovakia (AHS) handed out its prizes for the year’s best spokespeople on October 11 without any controversy, the prize for the worst spokesperson, which was supposed to go to the head of the Government Office’s press department, Erik Tomáš, was cancelled.A 12-member jury decides who wins the prize, known as the Raspberry, which goes to the worst spokesperson. It nominated Erik Tomáš and the spokesperson of the president’s office, Marek Trubač, who won the prize two years ago.

October edition of Nájdite sa! – Find Yourselves! saw 14 adoptions
THE NINTH edition of the Nájdite sa! (Find Yourselves!) event took place on October 5 and saw 12 successful adoptions, with two more completed afterwards. The series is organised in Bratislava’s Horský Park and allows animal shelters to present their pets to those who would like to adopt one. Numerous celebrities attended the event, including Kristína Farkašová (the ‘ambassador’ of the event), model and host Lucia Hablovičová, singer Peter “Šarkan” Novák, host Hanka Gallová, singer Jakub Petraník and host Matúš Krnčok.
Tax license provision of new budget disputed
WHILE the government of Robert Fico’s Smer party has promoted its 2014 budget plan with catchphrases touting it as a post-crisis budget of social reconciliation, responsible but based on solidarity, the opposition is calling the plan, which the Slovak cabinet approved on October 10, a wasted chance, risky, a blow to free enterprise and part of Fico’s campaign for next year’s presidential election.
Klausová becomes Czech ambassador to Slovakia
LÍVIA Klausová, wife of former Czech President Václav Klaus, has become new Czech ambassador to Slovakia after she received agreement from the Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry.
Police want to interrogate constitutional justices
POLICE have asked the Constitutional Court to strip three of its justices of their confidentiality pledge. The investigator of the anti-corruption unit wants to interrogate SergejKohut, Juraj Horváth and Ladislav Orosz against whom Supreme Court President Štefan Harabin submitted a complaint, alleging they have abused their powers of public officials, the Sme daily reported October 18.
“Bureaucratic nonsense” of the year announced
THE REGISTERATION and then the cancellation of registered people working on limited employment agreements, known as “na dohodu”, to the health insurance system by employers has won the Bureaucratic Nonsense 2013 award.
Hollande will visit Slovakia
FRENCH President Francois Hollande will become first president of the country to officially visit an independent Slovakia. The one-day trip will take place on October 29, the TASR newswire reported on October 17.
ÚPN head accused of sabotaging institute, responds it’s part of discrediting campaign
The Nation’s Memory Institute (ÚPN) Chairman Ondrej Krajňák refused to open the extraordinary session of the ÚPN Board on October 16 and left the meeting as boardmembers then unanimously approved a resolution which states “serious and deep concern over the action of its chair, Ondrej Krajňák, who in the long term disrespects the position and tasks of the institute’s bodies”.
