Tax Cobra reveals organised tax evasion racket
TAX COBRA, Slovakia’s special financial law enforcement unit, uncovered an organised three-man group that had been engaged in tax evasion at least since March 2013, causing the state a loss of at least €473,000. Charges against the trio have already been made, and if found guilty the men could face up to 12 years in jail.
Life sentences for deadly alcohol; one for a Slovak
THE CZECH Court in the city of Zlín has imposed life sentences on Slovak citizen Rudolf Fian and his employer Tomáš Křepela for having caused the deaths of 50 people and ruined the health of dozens more who were poisoned after drinking alcohol containing the toxic substance methanol.
Bora topples 2 million trees
A BORA, a specific type of massive katabatic windstorm, toppled almost two million trees in Slovakia and also damaged younger forest vegetation that had been replanted after a 2004 windstorm, when the Tatra Mountains, the country’s most popular tourist destination, saw entire forests levelled. The windstorm, which hit Slovakia on May 15, damaged 130,000 trees in the Tatra National Park (TANAP) alone, while 5,000 trees fell in areas with the highest degree of protection.

Gašparovič irked by Kiska’s email meeting request

THE PROSECUTION will investigate the situation in reformatory schools for children after Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová reported that the daily allowances for food are not sufficient to secure enough food for children, General Prosecutor Jaromír Čižnár decided.

Court tosses lawsuit against Most-Híd MPs
THE DISTRICT Court in Dunajská Streda ruled on May 19 in the lawsuit of József Kvarda (Party of Hungarian Community, SMK), a Trnava region councillor, against two MPs of the Most-Híd party for libel.
Labour Centre: April saw further drop in unemployment rate
THE UNEMPLOYMENT rate dropped to 12.96 percent in April, thereby decreasing by 1.45 percentage points (p.p.) year-on-year, the Labour, Social Affairs and Family Centre (ÚPSVaR) announced on May 20. In terms of monthly developments, the figure fell 0.32 p.p. month-on-month, thus contributing to a continuing fall in the number of unemployed people.
Ex-PM Radičová did not discuss Osrblie complex with aide
FORMER prime minister Iveta Radičová testified in the corruption case involving her former external advisor Martin Novotný, and also Igor Liška, on May 20. She denied having ever talked with Novotný about the completion of the biathlon complex in Osrblie. Both Novotný and Liška are being charged with indirect bribery over arranging the final funding of the project.
UPDATED: Harabin fails to get re-elected; claims victory
CRITICS of Štefan Harabin rejoiced after they saw him fail on May 19 in his bid for re-election as the head of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council, the body overseeing the country’s judiciary. Harabin, however, rejects that his failure to collect at least 10 of the 16 votes of members of the Judicial Council in the first and second round of the election actually means that his term at the helm of the Supreme Court is over.
Wind storm damages nearly two million trees
THE WIND STORM that recently struck Slovakia damaged nearly two million trees. The level of destruction caused by the storm is comparable to the 2004 wind calamity, the Agriculture Ministry informed on May 19.

Tax Cobra charges 26 people
TAX Cobra, a special financial law enforcement unit, has revealed a major tax fraud scam pertaining to a fictitious business dealing in natural stone, which could have deprived the state of €40 million. A total of 67 firms are involved in the case, and the investigator has accused 26 people, the TASR newswire reported on May 19.
Kotleba issues new magazine
THE OFFICE of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region has printed a new magazine reminiscent of the controversial newspaper Náš Kraj (Our Region), which is currently under scrutiny by police. Regional representatives say that Bystrický Kraj (Bystrica Region), as the new paper is called, consists of promotional and informational material whose printing was funded from money approved by the regional councillors, the TASR newswire reported on May 19.
Poll: Seven parties in parliament, SaS and NOVA out
IF PARLIAMENTARY elections had taken place in early May, seven parties would have won seats in parliament. Most votes would have gone to the ruling Smer party, up to 34.6 percent, giving them 66 seats, according to the poll carried out by the Focus polling agency between May 6 and 13 on 1,037 respondents.
Judicial Council received anti-Harabin petition signed by 11,000 prior to vote
MORE THAN 11,000 people signed a petition stating they do not want Štefan Harabin to continue as the head of the judiciary for another term. The activists who initiated the petition passed it on to the members of the Judicial Council, which convened on May 19 in the eastern Slovak town of Sobrance to elect the new Judicial Council head.
