Smer wins EP vote, turnout 13 percent, according to unofficial results
LESS than 13 percent of Slovak voters cast their vote in the elections to the European Parliament (EP), according to unofficial results, remaining true to the country’s reputation of posting low turnouts since joining the EU in 2004.

THE ARBITRATION proceedings initiated by Dutch company Achmea, the owner of the health insurer Union, against the Slovak government, which plans to merge the three existing health insurers and introduce a unitary state system of health insurance, ended with a victory for Slovakia.
Gašparovič met Kiska in High Tatras
PRESIDENT-elect Andrej Kiska met with current President Ivan Gašparovič in Tatranská Javorina in the High Tatra mountains on May 22. The meeting was initiated by Gašparovič and lasted approximately two hours, Kiska’s team informed the TASR newswire. Gašparovič is currently on a business trip to eastern Slovakia.

CRITICS of Štefan Harabin rejoiced after they saw him fail in his May 19 bid for re-election as the head of the Supreme Court and the Judicial Council, the body overseeing the country’s judiciary. Harabin, however, rejects that his failure to collect at least 10 of the 16 votes from members of the Judicial Council in the first and second round of the election actually means that his term at the helm of the Supreme Court is over.
PM Fico: Government fulfilling key tasks of programme
SLOVAK Prime Minister Robert evaluated the first half of his current government’s term in office on May 21, opining that the government has been fulfilling the three key tasks from its keynote agenda, which are consolidation of public funds, supporting economic growth and price stability, and lowering unemployment in Slovakia.

Number of suicides rose in 2013
SLOVAKIA’S suicide rate increased in 2013 when the number of suicides went up by 57 year-on-year to 628, announced National Centre of Medical Information (NCZI). The highest number of suicides in Slovakia was in 2008, when 631 people decided to end their lives.

Government approves ban on mining radioactive substances
THE ISSUE of mining radioactive substances has resonated in Slovakia mainly in connection with a uranium deposit in Jahodná near Košice. In response to a long-running dispute between locals and the mining company, the Slovak government in its May 21 session approved an amendment to the geological law that bans any mining of radioactive substances in the country.
