Bratislava Music Festival, BHS, celebrates half a century
THE TRADITIONAL Bratislava Music Festival / Bratislavské Hudobné Slávnosti (BHS) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2014, and the organisers have invited an impressive group of orchestra to participate.
E-Health plan postponed
PEOPLE waiting for electronic services in health care will have to wait another year. The Health Ministry halted the competition over the system to secure, among other things, connections between hospitals and general practitioners’ clinics, and postponed the implementation of its e-Health project to 2017 over concerns that it might have to return some EU funds.

Slovak insurance sector stays the course
THE SLOVAK insurance sector saw no dramatic changes last year, while stabilisation in the eurozone was reflected in developments in Slovakia, too, which mirrored those in other countries in the region. Expectations with respect to positive developments in macro-economic indicators are optimistic. In addition, the insurance sector is preparing for Solvency II and the payment of the first pensions from the so-called second, private, old-age insurance pillar.
European theatre in SND (updated)
AMONG theatre festivals in Slovakia, a new tradition has been launched: the Slovak National Theatre (SND) is starting the so-called ‘zero year’ of Eurokontext, a biennial festival of European theatre offering opera, ballet and drama. Between June 5 and 24, 17 theatres from 10 countries (including Slovakia) will offer 37 performances.
'Artetherapy' as theatre
SUBTITLED “The Powerless to Those in Power,” the Arteterapia theatre festival presents 11 performances by various community theatres, focusing mainly on the wrongdoings, injustices and marginalisation of various groups of people. After five years in Banská Bystrica the festival has moved to Bratislava, and between June 3 and 6 it can be visited in the STU Small Stage / Malá Scéna on Dostojevského Rad and in the Ticho a spol. / Silence & Co independent theatre on Školská 4. In addition to Slovak ensembles, theatre-makers from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Italy and Saudi Arabia will also be involved.
Car insurance scam revealed
THE NATIONAL criminal agency has uncovered a group of seven people who filed fraudulent claims worth €775,000 with an insurance company over fictitious car accidents.
Gender equality laws change insurance
ALTHOUGH women live longer, are healthier and according to statistics often exercise greater caution than men, a new EU directive means that both genders pay equally for insurance. Companies in Slovakia had to adapt to the directive authorised by the European Court of Justice and are no longer able to use gender when calculating insurance premiums or benefits.
Slovak observer captured
A SLOVAK was among a group of observers from the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) captured about 35 kilometres from Donetsk on May 28. The observers were released later in the day.
Olympic plans evaporate
PREVIOUSLY lauded as an event that could put Slovakia on the map, the Olympic Games in Poland are now highly unlikely as voters in Krakow rejected plans to bid for the 2022 Winter Games, which would have seen Slovakia co-host skiing events.
More people buying insurance online
NEW technologies are impacting the insurance industry and several companies in Slovakia now sell insurance policies via the internet or mobiles – along with reporting an increased interest from clients in these channels.
Lučenec commemorates WWII victims
LOCALS from the town of Lučenec in Banská Bystrica Region gathered there with representatives of the Russian Embassy in Slovakia on Thursday to commemorate the victory over fascism in the Second World War.
Nicholson robbed; loses notes, PC
A COUPLE of men robbed investigative journalist Tom Nicholson in Poland. They stole his car, which was later found in a forest near Warsaw. The men also stole his luggage, including his laptop, memory disks and notes containing sensitive information, the Sme daily reported in its May 29 issue.Nicholson, a Canadian journalist based in Slovakia who formerly worked as publisher and editor-in-chief of The Slovak Spectator, has broken several notable stories about alleged corruption. Though he says this seems like an ordinary theft incident, he is concerned about his sources and information obtained from them contained in his notes, Sme wrote.

Extreme weather brings spike in claims
THE HEAVY wind, rain and floods that hit northeastern Slovakia in mid-May caused damage to households in the affected areas totalling €1.8 million, while insurance companies expect still more claims and damages to be reported, the Sme daily reported on May 25. Since not all households in Slovakia are insured, the total cost of the damage is much higher.
