Italians selling shares in Kosit
ITALIAN shareholders are leaving the Košice-based waste management company Kosit. They are selling their 66-percent stake in Kosit to the investment group Wood & Co for over €14.2 million, the SITA newswire wrote on June 16. The city of Košice, which holds the remaining 34 percent stake, has not used its pre-emptive right, but has kept its minority stake. The whole transaction is taking place under the auspices of UBS bank. Until the whole transaction is over, Italian investors cannot provide any detailed information.
Harabin's shuffling haunts judiciary
BACK IN 2009, then supreme court president Štefan Harabin changed the composition of a Supreme Court senate which looked into complaints against the decisions of ministries and state offices. The Constitutional Court recently ruled that his decision violated the right of railway freight carrier Cargo to a randomly selected judge, the Sme daily reported, suggesting that the senate’s rulings are now vulnerable to further challenges.
Italian seniors drawn to Bystrica
A DELEGATION of Italian businesspersons from Rome, Milan, Bari and Sicily visited Banská Bystrica in May to explore possibilities of cooperation with local businessmen and the city management in tourism and to draw more Italians to this region, the TASR newswire wrote.
Court confirms 25 year sentence for Slovakia’s first ever terrorism trial
A MAN sentenced to 25 years in prison for a terrorist attack near a McDonald restaurant in Košice in 2011, had his sentence upheld by July 9 by a Košice district court. The man is the first ever person convicted of terrorism in Slovakia.
Smer is country’s wealthiest political party
PRIME Minister Robert Fico’s Smer party had property valued at €11.2 million in 2013, according to information about property management of political parties disclosed in parliament today.

Fitch will no longer rate Slovenské Elektrárne
FITCH ratings agency, which evaluates the credit worthiness of companies, will no longer track Slovakia’s largest power producer, Slovenské Elektrárne. The decision comes in times when company Slovenské Elektrárne, the majority of which is owned by Italian Enel, struggles with the completion of nuclear power plant in Mochovce.
Italian journalist based in Slovakia is stabbed
ITALIAN journalist Antonio Papaleo who participated in revealing a Slovak scheme of money laundering was stabbed during his holiday in Thailand on July 3. He survived the attack and is recovering in hospital under police protection.

Slovak and Czech presidents meet in Prague
On July 9, Slovak President Andrej Kiska left for his first official bilateral foreign visit since taking office three weeks ago; his first steps led to Prague where he was received by his Czech counterpart Miloš Zeman.
Foreign-trade surplus at €305.9 million in April, €465 million in May
Slovakia’s foreign trade posted a surplus of €305.9 million in April of this year, which was €242.9 million lower than the figure recorded in April 2013, the Slovak Statistics Office (ŠÚ) announced on July 9.

Industrial production in May grew 6.1 percent year-on-year after adjustment due to number of working days.
Water exports may be banned
RESPONDING to a populist outcry, the ruling Smer party is considering adding a ban on exporting water into the country’s constitution.
