Kiska to be cautious with judges
FROM now on, candidates approved by the Judicial Council, the top body overseeing the operation of the judiciary in Slovakia, might not be appointed automatically. President Andrej Kiska will first look into their background, the Sme daily suggests. The Judicial Council has already sent Kiska a list of eight judges who are now awaiting their appointment.
Project to back whistleblowers launched
CORRUPTION robs Slovak taxpayers of approximately €1 billion annually, a sum that could finance 20 new hospitals equipped with top technology, 10,000 new playgrounds or a flat hike in the salaries for teachers and nurses by €200, according to businessmen Miroslav Trnka and Michal Bláha, founders of the Let’s Stop Corruption foundation.

Slovak wines of the year named
THE EASIEST way to taste the best Slovak wines is to visit the Slovak National Collection of Wines, either in Pezinok or Bratislava. Here visitors can taste from the 100 best Slovak wines selected annually by wine experts for the given year. In late June the ninth collection of wines was chosen.
Smer moves to insert water protection into constitution
THE RULING Smer party is serious about its plan to add a ban on exporting water into the country’s constitution, a move which came in response to a populist outcry over new rules regulating the sale of Slovak water abroad which are being discussed by lawmakers. The Environment Ministry has already sent the draft to an interdepartmental review, opening it up to comments.
Conservatives push referendum
THE CONSTITUTIONAL definition of marriage, which some gay-right-advocates openly called a ban on same-sex marriages, does not go far enough, some conservative activists say, as they gather signatures to force a referendum that would make the laws even stronger.
World Refugee Day marked with football match and more
A TEAM comprised of people from a refugee camp and a multicultural team faced each other in a football match on Bratislava’s Primate’s Square on June 20 to mark World Refugee Day. The match was intended to highlight problems that refugees face in Slovakia as well as to point to the difficult lives of people who have to leave their homelands.
FinMin introduces new measures to close tax loopholes
THE FINANCE Ministry attributes its increased collection of tax revenues to measures it has enacted to combat tax evasion, and it intends to continue down this path by closing some legal loopholes. In early July, the ministry introduced another package of measures aimed at further increasing tax collection, and plans to submit draft revisions to respective laws to interdepartmental review. The views among companies on the proposed changes, however, are mixed.

Atlas of Roma Communities is completed
THE NEW Atlas of Roma Communities shows there are 14 Roma settlements in Slovakia in conditions similar to the Middle Ages, lacking access to water, sewers, electricity or gas.
Quality of democracy slightly up as Kiska takes office
THE INAUGURATION of President Andrej Kiska and his subsequent activities in the presidential post have helped to slightly increase the quality of democracy in Slovakia, according to an index produced by the Institute for Public Affairs (IVO).
Saints Cyril and Methodius honoured in Nitra
A NATIONAL celebration marking the 1,151st anniversary of the arrival of Ss Cyril and Methodius on the territory of modern-day Slovakia took place in Nitra, with thousands of pilgrims from all around Slovakia in attendance. The celebration was held on July 5, a national holiday dedicated to the two Byzantine Christian missionaries, and attracted personalities from the religious and political spheres.
Slovakia experienced moderate deflation in June
AFTER stagnation in May, a moderate decrease in consumer prices resumed in June. Prices decreased by 0.1 percent in June compared with the same period of 2013, when the month-on-month comparison saw growth slow from May’s 0.2 percent to June’s 0.1 percent, the Slovak Statistics Office reported on July 14.
Budget cuts dragged on growth last year
CONSOLIDATION measures adopted in recent years have negatively affected the Slovak economy, but growth was not significantly reduced, according to the latest report of the Financial Policy Institute (IFP), published on July 15.
Emerging parties’ financing in spotlight
LOCAL media have recently drawn attention to the financing of new non-parliamentary political parties, which must make ends meet without contributions from the state, unlike the parties represented in parliament, as well as those which won 3 percent or more of the vote in the parliamentary election. This comes in light of concerns raised over the financing of unsuccessful presidential candidate Radoslav Procházka, and the subsequent financing of his new party, Sieť.

HISTORIANS are protesting against a webpage that labels the outbreak of the Slovak National Uprising (SNP) the black day of the Slovak nation and the act of guerrilla murderers.
Citizenship Act deprived 855 people of Slovak citizenship in four years
BECAUSE of the ban on dual citizenship implemented in July 17, 2010 by Prime Minister Robert Fico’s first government, 482 men and 373 women lost their citizenship, most in favour of Czech citizenship.
Kiska: Sanctions against Russia are sufficient
THE RECENT push to increase sanctions on Russia is sufficient and there are no vigorous actions needed, Slovak President Andrej Kiska told to press after meeting with Austrian President Heinz Fischer on July 17.

Slovak women marry foreigners at four times the rate of men, with one in eight Slovak brides finding a husband from abroad.
