Candidates emerge for November municipal elections
In Košice, a former member of the Christian-Democratic Movement (KDH) Ján Dečo has announced he would run for the post of mayor. Dečo, aged 52, is married and has five children. Currently, he makes business in social services and tourism.
Head of the parliamentary committee asks Pavlis to explain tax relief
The chemical company Duslo Šaľa from the portfolio of the tycoon and Czech Finance Minister (of Slovak origin) Andrej Babiš is seeking Slovakia’s biggest tax relief package in more than a decade, but Viliam Novotný (Slovak Democratic and Christian Union (SDKÚ) has asked Economy Minister Pavol Pavlis in a letter to explain the aid.
Sieť: Hundreds applying for membership
Radoslav Procházka’s new party Sieť (meaning “Network”) has launched the process of adopting members, with 700 people already filling the application form that was made available on July 3, Procházka’s aide Martin Dubéci told the TASR newswire. According to Dubéci, the application forms show some interesting trends.
Slovak-Austrian cooperation broadening
Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann paid a brief working visit to Slovakia on July 16 aimed at coordinating the stances of the two countries before a European Council session in Brussels later in the day. There, the future makeup of the European Commission was discussed but not finalised.
IFP: Last year’s consolidation reduced GDP growth by 0.2 p.p.
Expenditure cuts appear to have been the most painful element for the Slovak economy in the short term, stated the Financial Policy Institute (IFP) in its latest report in which it looked into the impact of the government’s consolidation packages in recent years.

PRESIDENT Andrej Kiska is likely to meet with Speaker of Parliament Pavol Paška after the summer break to discuss the situation at the Constitutional Court, where two judges’ positions are still vacant after Kiska rejected five of the six candidates elected by parliament.
Most Slovak MEPs supported Juncker
TEN OF 13 Slovak MEPs supported Jean-Claude Juncker in his run for the post of the European Commission president. The 59-year-old politician received 422 votes, with 250 MEPs voting against.
Eurosport broadcasts Slovak tourism campaign
THE SLOVAK Tourist Board (SACR) has launched another campaign on the sporting television station Eurosport to lure foreign tourists to Slovakia. It will last from July to September. Last year more than 60 million people in 54 countries saw the spot.
Constitutional Court to work in three senates
ELEVEN judges of the Constitutional Court have been divided into three senates that deal with the ongoing cases. This stems from the amendment to the work schedule passed by the plenum on July 14.
New armament plant opened in Nováky
NEW JOINT Czech and Slovak plant CZ Slovensko for production of small arms opened on the grounds of the Vojenský Opravárenský Podnik (VOP) Nováky military maintenance company on July 15. The firm is the first step to restoring the armament industry in Slovakia, said Prime Minister Robert Fico who attended the opening, as reported by the SITA newswire.
Inflation drops again
AFTER May’s stagnation, inflation continued to fall in June. The official data from the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) showed that in annual terms it dropped by 0.1 percent year-on-year, with the highest decrease seen in food and energy. Observers predict that a drop in prices may also continue in the following months.
Smer-designed law change helps Lidl
THE RULING Smer party has secretly and quickly changed a law, based on which the retail chain Lidl should have lost its business licence. The tax office revealed in the beginning of the year that the chain was issuing receipts from defective cash registers, which could enable it to cheat when paying taxes. Though the current valid law allows the state to revoke Lidl’s business licence, nobody has submitted such a proposal yet, the Sme daily reported in its July 15 issue.
Judges call for challenging clearances
ALTOGETHER 660 of 1,400 judges have turned to MPs and Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová and asked them to challenge the recently passed measure allowing across-the-board security clearances with the Constitutional Court. The measure will become effective on September 1.
