Campaign points out differences in salaries of men and women
Women in Slovakia are still paid less for work than men, statistics show. The campaign titled “When I Grow Up” organised the Labour Ministry in cooperation with the European Commission’s Representation to Slovakia points out the difference in remuneration of men and women, State Secretary at the Labour Ministry Jozef Burian told an August 12 news conference in Bratislava. The campaign is funded with approximately €400,000 excluding VAT.
Most people support changes to state support of churches
A MAJORITY of Slovaks are dissatisfied with the relationship between church and state, the latest survey of the Institute of Sociology of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) showed.
Prices continue to drop
INFLATION continues to decrease in Slovakia after falling 0.1 percent year-on-year in July. Compared to June 2014, the consumer prices also fell by 0.1 percent, while during the first seven months of the year they dropped by 0.1 percent compared to 2013, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on August 12.

Court upholds original verdicts in Osrblie case
THE SPECIALISED Criminal Court in Pezinok has upheld the conditional punishments for Martin Novotný, a former advisor to ex-prime minister Iveta Radičová, and Igor Líška, a former Slovak ambassador to Kenya. The court found them guilty of indirect corruption and issued for them a one-year conditional sentence with a two-year probation period. It also ordered them to pay a fine of €10,000, the SITA newswire reported on August 12.
Two candidates for ECJ post
TWO PROPOSALS for Slovakia’s new representative at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) were submitted to the Judicial Council by August 7. One of the candidates is former Constitutional Court president, former ECJ general advocate and current advisor to the president Ján Mazák, with the other being former Constitutional Court judge and current ECJ judge Daniel Šváby, the TASR newswire reported on August 12.
Slovakia to send €20,000 to Palestinians in Gaza Strip
FOREIGN Minister Miroslav Lajčák has decided to send humanitarian aid to Palestinians to relieve the deteriorating situation in the Gaza Strip, the ministry’s press department announced on August 11.
Sanctions are damaging Slovakia’s economy, says Fico
SLOVAKIA is being harmed both by the European Union’s sanctions adopted against Russia and Russian sanctions against the EU, Prime Minister Robert Fico’s spokesperson Beatrice Szaboová said in reaction to the opposition’s criticism of the prime minister on August 11.
