Firms ask for extension of highway construction deadlines
SEVERAL construction companies that are delayed in their highway construction work in Slovakia argue that the delays come because of bad weather and are now asking for extended deadlines. Meanwhile, Construction Minister Ján Počiatek insists that 2019 will be the year Bratislava and Košice should be joined by the D1 highway.
Horses from all over Slovakia compete in Topoľčianky
NOBLE horse breeds from across the country competed at an exhibition at the National Stud Farm in Topoľčianky. The event drew 40 breeders and organisers informed the TASR newswire that a total of 50 horses were judged. Breeds included traditional ones like Arabian thoroughbreds, Nonius, Furioso and Lipizzaner.
Roma children to attend musical summer school, perform
CZECH musician Ida Kelarová has devoted a lot of time and effort to addressing Roma that live in a marginalised situation through her Romano Drom (Roma Way) project with her Miret civic association and this summer has for the first time organised a musical summer school for children.

THE CONTROVERSY surrounding the financing of the presidential campaign of Radoslav Procházka has made it to the General Prosecutor’s Office. Procházka insists the voice recording that has been used against him has been altered, but also refuses to allow Igor Matovič to publish the unedited version of it.

AFTER seven years, the renovated tower of the Budatín Castle, the only castle in the city of Žilina, opened to the public on July 13.
Excessive imports of Ukrainian food feared
FOOD producers in Slovakia warn against dangers that can follow Russia’s ban on some food imports from Ukraine in late July, including flooding the market with cheap Ukrainian products and a subsequent threat to jobs in food production. The Agriculture Ministry however says there is no reason to fear since the food will first need to meet European Union requirements.
Slovak art academies celebrate 65th anniversary
TWO colleges were established in Bratislava in 1949. The Academy of Fine Arts (VŠVU) was the first college in Slovakia focused on a complex study of visual arts while the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) with its musical faculty connected to the tradition of music education and culture on the Slovak territory. Both are celebrating their 65th year.

THE MEDIA have grilled third place presidential candidate Radoslav Procházka for unclear costs of his presidential campaign, but more recent reports suggest others might have underreported spending in their official reports too.
Festival connects Roma and non-Roma
BEGINNING August, Slovakia will experience a host of events inspired by, and focused on minority cultures, especially the Roma. The biggest of these is the International Gypsy Fest (IGF) that is comprised of a number of events.
Radiators could be used for cooling too
NOT ONLY the environment, but also the technologies gradually adapt to increasing temperatures. Most recently, heat producers came with the idea to use existing radiators to cool down, rather than heat up, rooms. Such a change should, among other things, decrease the expenses of the households, they say.
Court frees corruption suspects
THE SPECIALISED Criminal Court has closed a high-profile corruption case from 2010 by freeing all the suspects, citing lack of evidence on July 30. Five people had been charged in the alleged corruption case, including prosecutor Michal Barila, attorney Ladislav Ščury, who was the district chairman of the Most-Híd party in Čadca, and Jozef Krajča from Smer, the Sme daily reported.
Watchdog pans proposed construction law
SLOVAKIA is changing its construction act after 38 years with the Ministry of Transport, Construction and Regional Development promoting the new legislation as a set of rules making procedures at construction offices more effective and addressing the country’s problems with illegal constructions. However, the legal ethics watchdog Via Iuris does not share the enthusiasm of the ministry claiming that the new laws contain several loopholes that might limit the rights of citizens to decide about their own land.
INEKO: Finances do not affect school results
THE TYPE or available finances for schools do not affect results of its pupils, according to Institute for Economic and Social Reforms (INEKO). The institute published updated list of schools informing public about the results achieved by school students and graduates on July 30.
Payroll tax incentives have yet to create many jobs
THE LABOUR Ministry’s expectations that firms will hire long-term unemployed people thanks to payroll taxes relief has not materialised in first nine months since the law kicked in.
