Revenues increased in wholesale and accommodation in June
THE REVENUES of individual internal trade activities grew in wholesale and accommodation equally by 1.1 percent month-on-month in June, followed by sale and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles by 0.8 percent, food and beverage service activities by 0.6 percent and in retail trade by 0.2 percent, the Statistics Office (ŠÚ) informed on August 5.
Some 85,000 Slovaks have never worked, report shows
MORE THAN 85,000 Slovaks have never held a job, and have therefore never had a chance to develop work experience, Poštová Banka analysts wrote in their latest economic weekly based on the Statistics Office data for the first quarter of 2014.
Sieť loses one third of voters in recent poll
IF A PARLIAMENTARY election had taken place in late June, the ruling Smer party would have won 36.8 percent of the vote, according to the latest poll by the Focus polling agency. Sieť would get 10.6, which is a 5.2-percentage point drop in comparison with the previous poll published by Focus in June.
Pellegrini promises to boost spending on food in reform schools
EDUCATION Minister Peter Pellegrini promised that the daily contribution of food for children in reform schools will increase by 20 percent to €3.6 after he met Ombudswoman Jana Dubovcová.

A STORM that hit Bratislava on August 3 damaged 14 trolley-bus turnouts, flooded several roads and subways and tore off four registration tables from the city’s public transportation vehicles.
Most EU funds temporarily halted
IN reaction to errors made when drawing European Union funds and running the operational programmes for which those funds are intended, the European Commission (EC) suspended Slovakia’s ability to draw these funds in the majority of operational programmes.

STANDARD & POOR’s rating agency confirmed on August 1 an A rating for Slovakia and improved its rating outlook from stable to positive.

SLOVAK pulmonologists met at the 20th Bardejov Days of Pulmonologists and Phthisiologists conference in the end of May, and broke the Slovak record for the number of people inflating a single balloon.
Contemporary Slovak art presented in Santa Cruz
SEVEN Slovak artists participated in the Regular Link project that presented contemporary Slovak art, represented by painting, music, dance and design, in Santa Cruz, California. The project was initiated by Platform 1-12, a Slovak organisation for contemporary art and culture from Topoľčany, and the Santa Cruz art community.
Heavy metal festival will take place
METAL music festival Gothoom will be held in Nová Baňa, Banská Bystrica Region, despite protests. The district prosecutor’s office has found the motion, submitted by some citizens who were saying the songs offend the Christians and were calling on the town to stop the concerts, unfounded. Though it recommended the town to monitor the songs, the mayor has not confirmed whether he will do it.

Potential Spanish-owned foundry project revived
AFTER plans to build a brand new foundry near Prešov failed because of protests by local residents, the Spanish investor has moved its plan to a nearby village of Petrovany. There, most of the population appears supportive of the project. Petrovany Mayor Ján Lenko is optimistic, but warns that before the foundry materialises it is necessary to complete the environmental impact assessment (EIA) and finalise the land transaction. Unemployment in the area is nearly 16 percent.
Suspected mine found during Old Bridge project
SUSPICIONS about World War II bombs on the bottom of the Danube River which led to suspending reconstruction work on the Old Bridge look to have been for good cause. Sonar inspection has revealed four suspicious objects close to the bridge and one of them resembles a mine.
Third green jersey for Sagan
THE 101st edition of the Tour de France was another successful one for Slovak cyclist Peter Sagan who got for the third time in his career green jersey for the best sprinter in the competition on July 27. Just six cyclists in tour’s history have reached this number and Sagan is the youngest.
RegioJet launch Bratislava to Košice rail route
THE LARGEST private train carrier in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, RegioJet, will enter long-distance transport in Slovakia after railway network operator Železnice Slovenskej Republiky allowed the company to extend its service to Košice.
