PSA halted production for two weeks
TRNAVA-based car-manufacturing plant owned by PSA Peugeot Citröen Slovakia will halt production from September 22 to October 3, 2014 due to falling demand for new cars.
Lipšic to contest Smer’s scrapping of opposition draft bills with Constitutional Court
INDEPENDENT MP Daniel Lipšic (NOVA) is preparing to file a motion with the Slovak Constitutional Court to contest the elimination of opposition bills and proposals from the agenda of the parliamentary session. He told the TASR newswire that the ruling Smer party violated the constitutional right of the opposition MPs by scrapping these bills and proposals.
Parliamentary committee sanctions three public officials
THE PARLIAMENTARY Committee for Incompatibility of Functions cut the salaries of three public officials, all of whom simultaneously held positions as legal representatives in private companies. This is banned by the law.
Slovak Engineering firm expands
PREŠOV-based Slovak engineering company Spinea, which is engaged in the development and manufacturing of high-precision reduction gears, is expanding.
Focus poll: Smer would win with 33.6 percent; Sieť second with 11.2
IF THE parliamentary elections took place in early September, the ruling Smer party would win with 33.6 percent of votes, garnering 67 seats in parliament, but losing 4.2 percent against a previous poll. This stems from a poll organised by the Focus agency in September.
Parliamentary committees discuss Ukraine
SLOVAKIA respects the territorial integrity of Ukraine, condemns the actions of the Russian Federation that violate these principles, and lends support to the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajčák said. He was speaking following a joint parliamentary foreign affairs and European affairs committees’ session on September 17 convened by the opposition.
Harmonised inflation at -0.2 percent in August
THE ANNUAL inflation rate measured by the harmonised index of consumer prices stood at -0.2 percent in August. The average annual inflation rate, expressed by an increase in the average annual harmonised index of consumer prices for the last 12 months in comparison with the average for the preceding 12 months, reached 0.1 percent in August, the Statistics Office informed on September 17.

THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court (CC) suspended the provisions of the law pertaining to the widely debated across-the-board security clearances for judges at its September 17 session. The court will examine whether these provisions, passed on June 4 as part of a revision to the constitution born from a peculiar union between the ruling Smer and the opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH), are in line with the constitution. The motion was submitted by deputy chair of the Judicial Council Ján Vanko on September 1.

THE INTERNATIONAL consortium led by the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) consulting agency was picked to advise the public-private partnership (PPP) project for constructing the sections of the D4 highway and R7 express double-carriageway near Bratislava at a total length of 60 kilometres.
NATO soldiers will train in Slovakia
SOLDIERS from five NATO countries will come to Slovakia in October to participate in the Ground Pepper 2014 military training, the TASR newswire reported on September 16.
Preparations for EU presidency to cost €15.6 million
SLOVAKIA will spend about €15.6 million next year preparing for its presidency in the European Union, which will take place in the second half of 2016. The country will have to pay for the increased number of Slovak diplomats in Brussels, language courses for some state employees and computers, according to a report passed by the government in its September 17 session.
FinMin reportedly adjusts economic growth prognosis
THE FINANCE Ministry allegedly decreased its growth prognosis for 2015 from 3 to 2.6 percent, the Sme daily reported in its September 17 issue. The decision came one month after introduction of the first draft of the 2015 state budget.
Constitutional Court dismisses State Citizenship Act complaint
THE CONSTITUTIONAL Court (CC) dismissed a motion at its September 17 session brought by a group of MPs over the constitutionality of the amendment to the State Citizenship Act, which prohibits Slovaks from having dual citizenship. The court rejected the complaint for procedural reasons, CC President Ivetta Macejková said, explaining that it was not supported by the majority of judges present at the session, the SITA newswire reported.
Kiska visits Poland, accepts Poroshenko’s invitation to Ukraine
SLOVAK President Andrej Kiska left for a working visit to Warsaw on September 17 to discuss with Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski the current state of the bilateral relations, with an emphasis on specific infrastructure and energy projects, and current foreign policy issues.
