Logistics developers focus on renting available space
THE INFLOW of large investments before the financial and economic crisis was accompanied by swift development of logistics services in many parts of Slovakia. But the economic downturn seriously affected this business sector and construction of new logistics centres and warehouse capacities essentially came to a standstill in 2009. But experts in the field see future potential in Slovakia – fuelled by the arrival of new investors, the production launch of new car models and the country’s determination to develop a modern transportation infrastructure, both highways and rail.
Broad-gauge project presented
PRESIDENT of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin spoke in Bratislava recently about the yet-to-be approved investment project to extend a broad-gauge railway line from Košice to Bratislava and on to Vienna. Yakunin was a member of the delegation accompanying Russian President Dmitry Medvedev during his visit to Slovakia in early April, the SITA newswire wrote.

E-toll now in full force - but at what cost
ALMOST four months after the wobbly launch of an electronic system to collect highway tolls for vehicles weighing over 3.5 tonnes, the situation on Slovakia’s roads appears to have settled down. The European Commission is still awaiting answers to its questions about how the gigantic tender to develop the nationwide system ended up being awarded to the most expensive bidder, whose €850-million offer was almost one-third more expensive than its cheapest rival’s. But truck drivers have at least stopped blocking main transport arteries to get the new system cancelled, as they had been doing earlier in the year.
E-toll and highway stickers
www.emyto.sk – At this website operated by SkyToll, the electronic toll-system operator in Slovakia, truck drivers can find comprehensive information about the system. The rate for one kilometre driven ranges from €0.02 to €0.209 depending on the type of road used (highway or first-category road), type of vehicle, number of axles and environmental category of the vehicle.
Logistics parks sprout in Trenčín
THREE new logistics complexes will soon be constructed near Trenčín. Following two previously reported projects to be built in the villages of Chocholná-Velčice and Trenčianske Stankovce, a third logistics park has been announced in the area close to the village of Opatovce. Kupred, a Trenčín-based company, plans to construct a logistics park which will operate on both sides of the D1 highway, Obchod magazine reported in mid September.
Despite current caution logistics developers see a bright future
THE CURRENT financial and economic crisis has halted several speculative logistics and warehouse projects which developers had begun without any pre-leasing or other firm commitments from tenants.
Speculative logistics projects are now history
THE SITUATION in the logistics and warehousing market has more or less stabilised in Slovakia, mimicking developments in neighbouring countries, where the business has been operating for longer than in Slovakia. The financial and economic crisis has increased competition, pushing rentals down to record lows.
Slovak airports seek to boost goods traffic
AIR TRANSPORT of goods is defined by its high reliability, security and speed. In principle it is used mainly to transport goods with high added value and low weight, and fast moving consumer goods. But it has also found a niche in just-in-time transport and for transportation of new goods to new markets, where it can avoid the necessity to build buffer stores and where turnover of capital is higher.
Electronic toll system starts final phase
THE NEW system for electronic collection of tolls for use of highways and first class roads across Slovakia will start on January 1, 2010. Trucks and buses and other vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will pay the toll based on the number of kilometres driven. The satellite-based toll collection system will cover more than 2,000 kilometres of roads with six highway gates and 40 control gates on parallel first class roads.
Pinnacle becomes PointPark Properties
PINNACLE, a developer and operator of logistics parks has changed its name in Slovakia to PointPark Properties after it found out that its previous name was not directly associated with the development business, the Trend weekly reported in early September.

International Transport Law
Due to increased globalisation and the connected growth of the volume of international trade the importance of international transport law has also increased. Statistics show that more than 75% of Slovak industrial production is exported. These goods have to be transported to customers.
Large: We've used the crisis to look back
AFTER a recent robust growth in automotive logistics, also this segment is experiencing a drop in orders. Even though Gefco Slovakia also feels the heat of the crisis, it continues in its development and new projects. It diversifies the portfolio of its customers and apart from the automotive industry it implement its know-how in fast moving consumer goods, electronics, machinery and others .

Cargo transporters feel the crunch
THE GLOBAL economic downturn has hit not just product manufacturers, but also the companies which provide them with support services. Freight forwarding companies, operating either by road or rail, have found themselves badly affected by the economic crisis at the same time as they face other challenges, such as competition from abroad and the arrival of Slovakia’s new electronic road toll collection system.
Postage costs to go up in June
Postage for letters, the most important regulated group of products within the universal postal services, will increase in cost by about 9 percent in June 2009.
Electronic road toll system to replace stickers
FROM JANUARY 1 next year vehicles over 3.5 tonnes will no longer use stickers to pay to use highways and first class roads across Slovakia. Instead, Slovakia will be pioneering a satellite-based toll collection system. The company which won a mega-tender to install the network, the country’s first electronic highway toll system, will launch its operation on January 1, 2010.However, the tender has attracted a lot of public and media attention, not only because of its technical aspects but also due to the fact that details of the contract, which is worth hundreds of millions of euros, remain concealed from the public. Watchdog organisations have called for more information.
