After IBM, the American company AT&T is following suit and has started laying off employees, reports Index magazine. The latter's AT&T Global Network Services Slovakia division operates in Bratislava and Košice.
At the moment, how many people will be laid off is unknown. The company confirmed that it is carrying out this action to Index without providing further details.
"They are at the beginning, a few people from our team have been dismissed, and this will probably spill over to other teams as well," says a Bratislava branch employee under the condition of anonymity.
A Košice branch employee says that they know of at least 10 dismissed people over the last few days. If an employee agrees, they will receive a severance pay of three basic monthly salaries. Individual teams are not cancelled, but some employees must be dismissed. "On some teams, it affects 20 percent of people, in some even more or fewer, and in some no one at all," explains the employee.
Unofficially, either 400 employees or 20 percent of staff will be laid off.
"Reducing our workforce is a difficult decision that we don't take lightly. We are working with employee representatives and other key parties to manage the impact on our people," said the marketing and communications department of the company.
The current layoffs at AT&T are the most massive since 2021. At that time, 440 employees left the company. AT&T has been cutting staff almost every year since the pandemic.
"These measures are in line with our strategic focus on growth and related to the customer's behavioural changes. As a result, there will be a targeted reduction in our workforce in line with presented transformation initiatives," the department adds.
