Twins and triplets from Slovakia meet near Martin

Slovakia’s first nationwide gathering of twins and triplets took place on Saturday, June 2, in Valčianska Dolina, near the town of Martin.

On the Waves of the Danube exhibition uncovers history of Danube shipping

The current exhibition at the Transport Museum (Múzeum dopravy) of the Slovak Technical Museum in Bratislava presents 90 years of organised Czechoslovak and Slovak shipping on the European river Danube, through documents of shipping transport, photographs, and historical artefacts. The exhibition is the first of its kind in Slovakia and will last through the end of September.

Kapušany Castle

Kapušany Castle and its surroundings get a revamp

The surroundings of Kapušany Castle – as well as the historical structure itself – are being spruced up. People registered as jobseekers with the Labour Office can now work on the castle, located close to Prešov, thanks to the Cultural Heritage Preservation project. The municipality of Kapušany received €40,000 for materials from the Slovak Culture Ministry.

AN UNKNOWN vandal spilled red paint over a huge statue of Joseph Stalin that was on display outside of the Slovak National Gallery (SNG) as part of its exhibition called An Interrupted Song (Prerušená pieseň). The incident occurred on July 23 at noon and the SNG told the media that its video cameras and constant monitoring of the area in front of the Esterhazy Palace across from Štúra Square in Bratislava could lead to the arrest of the vandal. The museum filed a criminal complaint with the police.

Storks

Storks carefully relocated to a new nest

ENVIRONMENTALISTS helped by fire fighters and a large crane successful moved a family of storks nesting on a chimney of a family villa in Poprad-Veľká to a man-made construction mounted on a concrete pillar. The storks liked their old nest on the chimney of the villa so much that even after environmentalists from the Tatras National Park (TANAP) made a new nest for them this spring, they returned to their original nest on the chimney.

Cyclist Sagan to help open the London Olympics

SLOVAK cyclist Peter Sagan, after an outstanding result in the 2012 Tour de France cycling race, where he took the green jersey and won three stages, will represent Slovakia at the London Olympics on July 28. Sagan’s success in the tour has placed him among the most promising young cyclists in the world.

St George’s Rotunda is several centuries older than first thought

RESEARCHERS studying the Rotunda of St George in Nitrianska Blatnica in Topoľčany district have announced that they believe it is the oldest rotunda in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic. It was originally thought the rotunda was built in the first half of the 11th century but now the researchers believe it is several centuries older and dates back to the times of Great Moravia.

Kremnica-minted coin is sold for €130,000

A COIN called a called a zlatník (zlato means gold in Slovak) that was minted in Kremnica was sold at auction for €130,000.

United Buddy Bears in Polus in Bratislava

United Buddy Bears come to Polus City Center

A UNIQUE collection of 109 painted bear sculptures called United Buddy Bears – THE MINIS can be seen for the first time in Slovakia at the Polus City Center until August 13. The bears symbolise understanding and tolerance between nations of the world. The United Buddy Bears were first unveiled next to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in 2002-2003 and led to the creation of a smaller 2-metre version of what are known as ambassadors of peace.

Vintage car rally started in Trenčianske Teplice

SEVERAL vintage car shows and parades, an increasingly popular phenomenon throughout Slovakia, have been organised recently, including the 16th International Veterán Rally, one leg of which led from Trenčianske Teplice to Bojnice. Participants of this leg drove off on June 1, 2012.

Halušky Turecká Festival was visited by more than 3,000 people

BRYNDZOVÉ halušky, a Slovak dish consisting of sheep-cheese and potato dumplings, has become a symbol of Slovak traditional food, and is celebrated each year at the Halušky Turecká Festival in the municipality of Turecká, near Banská Bystrica (which is said to be where the dish originated). The festival debuted in 1995 and was conceived by “the Father of Halušky” Svetlan Turčna to celebrate the unique dish. Over the years it has developed into a Slovak and European-wide bryndzové halušky cook-off competition that has grown to include a variety of cultural and entertainment programmes.

A record mandala decorated the High Tatras

Over late June and early July, a record mandala was created on the Interski slope at the Štrbské Pleso resort in High Tatras. There are two types of mandalas: a traditional pattern made in Tibet from coloured rice or sand into Buddhist images and then destroyed afterwards (to symbolise the ephemeral nature of all worldly things); or any circular image or pattern, which can be numerous and very old, coming from all over the world.

Queen Eleonora’s crowning re-enacted in Bratislava

CORONATION festivities have become a regular event in Bratislava, re-enacting the ceremonies that took place in Bratislava between 1563 and 1830 when nineteen kings and queens of the Great Hungarian Empire were crowned at St Martin’s Cathedral because of the threat of an Ottoman invasion of Vienna, the capital of the empire. Coronations were returned to Vienna by Joseph II, the son of Empress Maria Theresa.

Historical mining map restored

AN HISTORICAL map of the main branch of the Horná Bíberova štôlňa (Upper Bíber’s Mine) in the Banská Štiavnica region dating back to 1641 has been restored by experts from the State Central Mining Archives, the Slovak National Archives as well as other institutions, said Maroš Stano, the spokesman for the Environment Ministry, to the SITA newswire.

Bears beat the heat with ice cream

BEARS at the Košice zoo received emergency doses of a special ice cream to cool them down during the recent heat wave across Slovakia. Four brown bears – Cyndy and Ťapík of the famous quintuplets recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records, along with Ivan and Žabo – seemed to really enjoy the icy treat.

Volunteers repair World War I cemetery in Slovakia

AN INERNATIONAL summer work camp to help in reconstruction of the largest cemetery of military victims of World War I in Slovakia was held in mid-June in Veľkrop in eastern Slovakia. Forty volunteers organised by the Visegrad Working Group for War Cemeteries came from non-governmental organisations in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia to help renovate the site. The NGOs were joined this year by a group from Romania and by other Slovak volunteers. “This is the largest World War I cemetery in Slovakia,” Martin Drobňák, head of the Club of Military History, told the TASR newswire. “According to the latest research some 10,000 soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian and Russian armies are buried here.” The identities of most of the soldiers are not known as Drobňák noted that “we know the names of only 11 of the soldiers buried here”.
