In the past, charity was defined as helping those who cannot help themselves. Medical doctor Mária Jasenáková does not see it this way anymore.

“Charity is about giving and receiving at the same time,” said Jasenáková, director of the non-governmental organisation Plamienok, which provides paediatric palliative care to incurable children. “It’s always about both sides helping each other. There are no strong or weak people; in some way, we are all vulnerable in different areas, and we can help and enrich one another.”

Zora Grohoľová from the International Women’s Club of Bratislava (IWCB), whose one of main objectives is charity, fully agrees, adding that it is a privilege for them to work with organisations like Plamienok.

“Thank you for enabling us to help,” said Grohoľová.

This year the IWCB will hold the 30th edition of its flagship event, Charity Christmas Bazaar, in Stará Tržnica (Old Market Hall) on November 24.
