THE RAILWAY that starts in Bratislava and goes through Devínska Nová Ves and Zohor to Skalica was built in 1891. It also connected the Záhorie region with Austria, as one of its routes went directly to Vienna.
But the region of Podhorie (which translates literally as "foothills", because it is located at the foot of the Low Carpathians) did not have such a connection. It produced wood, stone, lime, sand, gravel and livestock, which meant it was too poor to construct a rail line, so its villages remained isolated.
Bratislava county eventually used its own money to build a railroad that went through a large part of Podhorie. The route went from Zohor to Lozorno, Jablonové, Pernek, Kuchyňa and Plavecký Mikuláš and was put into operation on December 9, 1911. The railway stations were fitted with platforms that loaded goods to be transported deeper into the monarchy.
