If you want to change the way you look, but you do not want to spend a fortune, go and get a new hairstyle. very city is filled with beauty salons and barber shops. Most of the time they are separated for women and men. Women should look for the sign that says "kaderníctvo" and men should keep their eyes open for "holičstvo."
Almost every kaderníctvo requires an appointment. That means you should call two or three days in advance to arrange a time. But that it not the case all the time. When they are not really busy, they accept walk-ins.
Sometimes they ask you over the phone what you would like. Unfortunately, they usually expect you to know what style you want and they will just do it. It might be good to bring a picture along with you, to show what you want your hair to look like. Hairdressers always ask how much you want them to cut. It is better and also safer to say less than more (always tell them in centimeters, 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters). Also if you are planning on a new color for your hair be sure to tell them the right color, otherwise you might end up with red (červená) hair instead of black (čierna).
Bratislava offers many options for hairdressers, but unfortunately, there are only a few hairdressers that speak English. Among the places that speak English, Hotel Danube is the most expensive place to get your hair cut, but it is important that everybody there speaks English. Prices are 400 Sk for styling and 1,000 Sk for a perm.
Kaderníctvo Nora, on Blumentálska 6, has perhaps the cheapest prices among English-speaking places. They charge you 140 Sk for styling and 350 Sk for a perm.
If you live in Petržalka, and you are not willing to go downtown just to get your haircut, check-out Kaderníctvo Gabi on Haanova 21. They have very good prices, speak some English and Tibor (a young hairstylist) will do whatever hairstyle you ask for. He will also advise you on what could be good for you. Trifam club on Grösslingova 36, has prices above average, but they speak English and are always very nice and helpful to their customers.
Another place is on Grösslingova 25, Gestil, they are also one of the more expensive ones, but they always do a very good job and are willing to help. Unfortunately they do not speak English.
If you are going on a trip by bus and you want to get your hair fixed just before your journey, the main bus station at Mlynské Nivy has kaderníctvo and holičstvo on the first floor with very good prices and good service. In Košice, Kaderníctvo Glamur on Šoltésovej 13, is waiting to serve you and the stylist speaks some English. Although here you have to make an appointment one week beforehand.
