Japanese film festival

On January 30, this year's edition of the Japanese Film Festival started and will last until February 2. With three movies still to, there is plenty to see in the Kino Mladosť cinema in Bratislava's city centre where the event takes place at 19:30 each day. The movies are in Japanese and with both Slovak and English captions. Admission is free. Find out more here.

Concert with candlelight

Imagine going to a concert to listen to your favourite tunes while looking at hundreds of lit candles. Well, if that sounds interesting and you're a fan of the British band Coldplay to boot, you're in for a treat. Starting this Saturday in Trnava and continuing until the end of May, a string quartet will perform Coldplay's biggest hits such as Fix You, Yellow and Viva La Vida in a series of concerts across towns in Slovakia, including Bratislava, Košice, Nitra and others. Latin dance competition

On Saturday, the town of Trenčín will play host to a big celebration of dance, elegance and rhythm in the form of the Slovak Championship in Latin dances. Starting from early morning and lasting until night, the event promises to attract the best dancers of various age groups in Slovakia to showcase their skill. You can buy tickets for the whole day, the showcase, or finals, with grandstand tickets available on Sunday and payment in cash, while table tickets need to be reserved and paid by bank transfer. SPORT

One for cross-country skiers

Fans of cross-country skiing in Banská Bystrica are in for a treat. A bigger, 950-metre long trail recently opened around the lake. And if that wasn't enough, they are allowed to enter the light park at the Aqualand Banská Bystrica completely for free. Until Sunday, the trail will be open until 21:00, after that until 20:00. Two for bike buffs

Two Critical Mass rides will take place this Friday, with one in Nitra and the other in Košice. If you don't know, in cycling, Critical Mass events highlight and give space to people who want to safely ride bicycles on the streets of their town. On both occasions, the rides will start at 18:00. While the former will not be particularly organised, the latter is intended for every age group and skill level and even skaters, skateboarders and pretty much everyone without a combustion engine. MISCELLANEOUS FUN

Come watch birds

This Saturday's casual walk around the Devínske Jazero protected area in Bratislava's Devínska Nová Ves borough is aimed at observing birds of prey and water birds nesting in it, such as the hen harrier, the red kite, fish eagles and others. The admission is free, all you need is to register. Find out more here.

Come observe the night sky

On the other side of the country in the town of Trebišov, the local museum invites anyone to stop by on this Friday at 18:00 and observe the night sky that will be full of winter constellations as well as four planets of the Solar System.
