THE OLD School Brothers dance group held a charity performance on January 6 in the town of Námestovo to support the work of the Orava Youth Centre (Oravské centrum mládeže) in helping youths with drug problems, homeless people, as well as those in prison. The fundraising programme is traditionally organised for January 6 as Epiphany, a Slovak national holiday, means for most people a definite end of the holiday season and a large-scale return of employees to work and students back to school and the replacement of the festive atmosphere of previous weeks by everyday normality. But the organisers of the traditional Orava event see things a little bit differently.
“We have been organising the benefit programme for this very day so that we give the message to people that this is not true, that the Christmas season did not end but rather continues. Although the decorations at homes and in streets disappear, the good and the love in our hearts that is shown by giving to those in need cannot disappear,” Branislav Kožuch, the head of the Orava Youth Centre told the SITA newswire.
The dancers from the Old School Brothers presented their show Z ulice hore (Up from the Street) to those who paid an admission fee of €7 that will boost the activities and work of the youth centre. “There was more than an hour of dance and music where different “street-dance styles” were intermixed,” Kožuch said.
