Parliamentary elections set for June 12

SPEAKER of Parliament Pavol Paška has announced that parliamentary elections will be held on June 12, the SITA newswire reported on February 1. Political parties will re-divide the 150 seats in the Slovak parliament according to the elections results.

“These will be the seventh democratic elections held here since the breakthrough year of 1989,” said Paška at a news conference as quoted by SITA. He said he is hoping for the highest possible turnout. A high number of voters will strengthen the legitimacy of the election outcome, Paška said, while calling on political parties to behave fairly during their election campaigns.

Paška told SITA that he thinks that parties should present their values and understandable programmes with clear solutions so that people can vote based on experience and value orientation.

He also urged the media to focus on keeping a high standard of objective reporting during the campaign.

Parties now must submit their candidate lists by March 14.
