Speaker of parliament underwent stomach surgery

Speaker of parliament Andrej Danko underwent stomach surgery in Bratislava on Monday, April 25. The surgery took almost three hours during which surgeons removed part of his stomach due to abnormal-looking areas. Danko is conscious and communicating and will remain in hospital for 10-14 days, the TASR newswire reported.

“There was some issue with a part of the stomach’s outlet,” said Daniel Pinďák, surgical Oncology B Department head physician, who carried out the surgery. “It was completely removed and replaced by a piece of his small intestine. It was a standard procedure and without any complications. The patient is awake at the Anaesthesiology and Resuscitation Department.”

The removed tissue was sent for histopathological examination.

“Definitive results, which will shed some light on this unclear finding, will be available 7-10 days from now,” Jozef Dolinský, director of the National Institute of Oncology (NUO), at which Danko underwent the surgery, said at a following press conference.

In the past week, Danko said that he’s been exposed to great stress that might have affected his health.

“You’re facing thousands of attacks, receive political slaps, low blows and absorb also energy of people who are genuinely miserable and thinking how to change their life for the better,” Danko said back then. “I’d like to use also this opportunity to wish the Prime Minister [Robert Fico] a speedy recovery – we know his operation was successful. I hope that after the troubles with my stomach I, too, will return back to work quickly.”
