The bryndziareň (bryndza dairy) in Zvolenská Slatina recently celebrated 210 years of producing original Slovak bryndza, it was reported on August 15.
Founded in 1797 by the Molecovec family, and one of the oldest surviving businesses producing bryndza from sheep's milk, the company is preparing to mark its anniversary next week at a local event entitled Slatinské Halušky.
The dairy has undergone significant changes and investment since 1989 that have transformed it into a modern enterprise with a licence to export to other EU countries. Some time ago, the company expanded by launching an operation in nearby Slovenská Ľupča.
The company is pressing for Slovakia to adopt the Vienna Laboratory Method, which would set national regulations on the proportion of cow's, sheep's and goat's milk to be used in dairy products.
Such a measure would bring pressure to improve the quality of bryndza and other dairy products, and protect consumers in the process, as some producers have been adding cow's milk or other products to dairy foods instead of the declared sheep or goat's milk. TASR
