Japan shares Europe's concern for the eurozone
AKIRA Takamatsu believes that, symbolically speaking, Japan is not as distant from Slovakia as many Slovaks or Japanese might assume. The Japanese ambassador to Slovakia, who arrived last October, says that there are many ways to overcome the language barrier and to get involved in more intense communication between the two countries. Takamatsu would also like to see Japanese tourists stay in Slovakia for more than just a couple of hours on their way to or from other European countries.
Korean residents are not 'strangers'
HE KOREAN community living in Slovakia is quite numerous and regularly makes its presence felt as the Korean embassy organises a host of events each year to unite the community and arouse the interest and curiosity of Slovaks, and to forge new friendships.

EU trade agreements can broaden ties
JAPAN and Slovakia established official economic relations immediately after the separation of the Czech and Slovak Republics in 1993 and, in spite of the recent global financial and European debt crises, there is a lot of space to develop them further. The recent visit by Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič to Japan, as well as the prospects for the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) between Japan and the European Union, is expected to foster stronger economic relations between Japan and Slovakia.
Kia plans to make 285,000 cars in 2012
THE KIA Motors Slovakia plant in Teplička nad Váhom near Žilina is ramping up production. During the first half of 2012 it increased its output by 10 percent compared with the same period last year, making over 149,000 cars. Its plan for 2012 is to manufacture 285,000 cars in total. The company launched production of a new version of its Kia cee’d model in April, the company announced in a press release on July 10.
More than just Kia and Samsung
WHILE Kia and Samsung are the most well-known Korean-based firms with investments in Slovakia, these two firms have drawn many additional subcontractors that are part of manufacturing hubs in the automotive and electronic industries. More than 80 companies with Korean investment are currently operating in Slovakia, employing about 30,000 people. The Republic of Korea is one of Slovakia’s most important non-European economic partners.
Comparing cultures
ALTHOUGH the respective cultures of Slovakia and Japan might seem worlds apart, there are some similarities in the character, temperament and habits of the two peoples, according to Akira Takamatsu, Japan’s ambassador to Slovakia. He says that both Slovaks and Japanese tend to talk less, work more instead, and that both nations love classical music. But to share culture and understand each other better, direct contacts are best, Takamatsu opined. Even the language barrier, however insuperable an obstacle it might seem, can be overcome – if necessary via the use of English.
Foreign investors should not be taken for granted
ANY COUNTRY trying to attract foreign investment should not neglect those investors who have already arrived and are making a contribution to the national economy, because the competition for investment is tougher than ever. So argues Seok Soong Seo, the ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Slovakia.

Stream of investments from the Netherlands keeps flowing and rising
BUSINESSES based in the Netherlands remain significant investors in Slovakia and it seems that the country’s stream of investments is far from going dry. Dutch investors say they are drawn to Slovakia by its location in the centre of Europe, its good supply of qualified labour and its established relations with other central and eastern European countries.
LVD opens new plant in Tornaľa
A BELGIAN machinery company, LVD, opened another production plant in Tornaľa in eastern Slovakia last October. The plant known as LVD S3 covers 6,000 square metres and produces laser cutting systems. It is an extension to the existing LVD S2 plant. Investment in the plant, including equipping it with the most modern technology, is about €9 million.
Nová Ves loses Belgian investment
HOPES that a new factory operated by the Belgian company PDC Brush would open in Nová Ves, a village in the Veľký Krtíš district that has a 25-percent unemployment rate, have been dashed. The anticipated plan for the plant in the village to produce cleaning tools fell apart after there was a sudden change in the ownership of the Belgian company, according to an April report in Novohradské Noviny, a local newspaper.
