The Slovak government has approved investment assistance worth some €150 million to be granted to companies within more than a year, the Sme daily wrote on July 3. However, Economy Minister Tomáš Malatinský wants to increase this sum by an additional €14 million. It should be divided among four firms that promise to create around 800 new jobs.
Companies that are eligible for the aid include IBM, which plans to employ 150 IT specialists - 90 percent of which should be university graduates - in the Košice IT centre; Mobis, a supplier of the carmaker Kia; Dometic Slovakia, which is expanding its production in Fiľakovo and may employ 326 people for production of cookers; and Miba Sinter Slovakia from Dolný Kubín, which plans to employ 120 people to build two centres for development and production of components for the automotive industry. INEKO analyst Peter Goliaš however points to the bad situation of the state budget and suggested for Sme that instead of subsidising the selected companies via stimuli, the state should slash taxes for businesses across the board.
