Tatranská Lomnica - Lomnické sedlo
SNOWY weather has finally come to Slovakia, creating excellent conditions for natural snow resorts. One such area is Lomnické sedlo, the resort just above the village of Tatranská Lomnica, in Slovakia's High Tatras mountains.The resort is about four hours from Bratislava by car or express train. From the main railway station in Poprad, Tatranská Lomnica can be reached easily by electric tram.
Romeo and Juliet head to Japan
THE RENEWED multi-media dance performance Romeo and Juliet, initially directed and choreographed by Ján Ďurovčík to Henrich Leško's music in 1998, will premiere at the Bratislava Aréna theatre on February 25 and 26.
Opposition finds policy
ROBERT Fico, who has been leading political popularity charts in Slovakia, recently served the media a reason to speculate about a strategic partnership between his party, Smer, and ex-minister of defence Ivan Šimko, the leader of the Free Forum (SF).After meeting Šimko, a former ally of PM Mikuláš Dzurinda, on February 17, Fico said that he and Šimko held the same opinions on the control of power, fighting corruption, and the need for socially bearable measures.

Kovačica art in Prešov
THE ŠARIŠ Gallery in the eastern Slovak town of Prešov was just beginning to install its exhibition of Kovačica naive artists when the paintings drew the attention of a notable passer-by: presidential candidate Ivan Gašparovič. Not long after, the chairman of the Movement for Democracy was negotiating the purchase of a new painting."Mr Gašparovič already owns three paintings by the Kovačica naive painters," said Dagmar Skopárová from the Šariš Gallery. "
Holy trip stirs political controversy
ABOUT 3,500 pilgrims, the country's bishops, President Rudolf Schuster, and several members of parliament visited the Pope on February 14 to thank him for his third visit to Slovakia since his pontificate. The Pope came to Slovakia shortly after the fall of communism, later in the mid 1990s, and most recently in September 2003.At an audience in the Vatican, the 83-year-old John Paul II gave a 10-minute speech in which he appealed to Slovakia to bring their faith and human and spiritual values into the European Union, which Slovakia will enter in May 2004 along with nine other countries.

Russia on Rise
Russia has been through great changes over the past years. After a decade of turmoil, the country has achieved stability. Today it is a democratic state with a developing civil society. However, the implementation of reforms has not yet been accomplished. Further social and economic transformations are underway, while measures to overcome poverty have been taken by the government. Meanwhile, the legal system is improving and military forces have been modernised.
