Pohoda takes on the army
EMBLEMATIC of this year's Pohoda was the visible presence of the military. As the festival was held for the first time at the military airport in Trenčín, the Slovak Army took advantage of the attention to show itself off. As Saturday heated up, revellers began to linger under the canopied fighter jets and armoured vehicles on display, relaxing under wings and disarmed bombs.
A suspect memoir
I OWE a huge debt of gratitude to Slovakia. I was there between the ages of 24 and 27, and the time I spent was seminal in creating the person I am now. When I think back to those years, the memories I have make me laugh. I cried a lot too, and one of the most valuable things I learned was how we edit memories to make a thing into what we want it to be, and how precisely that articulates who we really are.

Staying nice and warm all summer long
THE SUN is frying the Slovak soil these days. However, until mid July the cold and rainy weather barely hinted at summer. The first days of summer holidays saw few cooling their bodies in regular pools. Instead, many were warming up at thermal springs. And before the weather calls the bathers back to the hot waters, here is some information on the rich, wet mineral life of the country.
Doľany
SOMETIME before the first world war, these peculiarly dressed boys stood in front of the lenses of a photographer in the village of Ottenthal, located in the Low Carpathians.Along with the statue of St Jan Nepomucký and the house with a straw roof in the background, they create a charming picture. However, neither the statue nor the house stands in the village today.
Disparity threatens regions with atrophy
THOUGH the international community is rosy about Slovakia's bold tax, labour, and pension reforms, leading institutions have not turned a blind eye to the gap that continues to grow between the wealthy western and underfed eastern parts of the country.Worrying regional imbalances are not Slovakia's pain alone, as the Czech Republic and Hungary also appear to be struggling to implement effective policies to lift their regions so that they at least approach the living standard that people in their capitals enjoy.
Fidesz claim rejected
AGRICULTURE Minister Zsolt Simon from the ruling Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) has denied speculations that Hungarian nationals could reclaim Slovak land that was confiscated as part of an agreement between the former Czechoslovakia and Hungary after the second world war.
