Pohoda takes on the army

EMBLEMATIC of this year's Pohoda was the visible presence of the military. As the festival was held for the first time at the military airport in Trenčín, the Slovak Army took advantage of the attention to show itself off. As Saturday heated up, revellers began to linger under the canopied fighter jets and armoured vehicles on display, relaxing under wings and disarmed bombs.

A suspect memoir

I OWE a huge debt of gratitude to Slovakia. I was there between the ages of 24 and 27, and the time I spent was seminal in creating the person I am now. When I think back to those years, the memories I have make me laugh. I cried a lot too, and one of the most valuable things I learned was how we edit memories to make a thing into what we want it to be, and how precisely that articulates who we really are.

Doľany

However, neither the statue nor the house stands in the village today.

Disparity threatens regions with atrophy

THOUGH the international community is rosy about Slovakia's bold tax, labour, and pension reforms, leading institutions have not turned a blind eye to the gap that continues to grow between the wealthy western and underfed eastern parts of the country.Worrying regional imbalances are not Slovakia's pain alone, as the Czech Republic and Hungary also appear to be struggling to implement effective policies to lift their regions so that they at least approach the living standard that people in their capitals enjoy.
