Land deal gets muddier
BUSINESSMAN Marián Kočner, who tried to take over the private TV broadcaster Markíza, the media child of current Economy Minister Pavol Rusko in 1998, has now bought around 9,000 square metres of the land on which the future plant of South Korean car giant Kia should be built.
The flood of the century, again?
IN JUST a few days at the end of July, a lake of 30 square kilometres gathered in the Zemplín region, the result of the Ondava River running wild. The river reached a level of more than 660 centimetres, exceeding a record of more than 100 years and tearing a rift 150 metres wide in an embankment above the villages of Markovce and Hradištská Moľva. Hundreds were evacuated, many leaving their water supply, the gardens they depend on, and their old and, in many cases, uninsured homes hopelessly exposed.

THE SAME weekend Banská Štiavnica will also belong to moviegoers. The summer film seminary Four Elements will run at the local Akademik cinema and amphitheatre for the sixth time between August 19 and 22.
Banská Štiavnica in drama...
BANSKÁ Štiavnica, a town with a rich historical legacy, will welcome artists from Slovakia and abroad at a festival of poetry, drama, and music called Cap ÷a l'Est or the Way Eastwards between August 19 and 21. The festival, which will again enable cultul encounters between France and eastern Europe, will host artists from 10 countries.
