KDH: Slovakia should be sovereign
MARCHING under the sign of a stork, an election mascot meant to evoke the theme of family values, the Christian Democrats (KDH) believe their conservative agenda will garner enough votes to give the party a decisive say in how the next government is shaped.
Smer: Next government must be acceptable abroad
ROBERT Kaliňák, the No 2 on the candidates list of the opposition social-democratic Smer and the party's vice-chairman, is not what one might imagine a socialist politician in a former communist country to be - young, modern and savvy, with current or former roles in almost a dozen companies.
More than just a home
FOREIGNERS are more and more interested in Slovakia's residential real estate market. Real estate agencies as well as mortgage brokers report growing numbers of deals with clients who are not residents of the Slovak Republic.
Transpetrol buyback possible
THE WAY is open for Slovakia to buy back a 49-percent stake in the oil pipeline company Transpetrol that it sold to the Russian company Yukos in 2002.
President defies parliament, cabinet
AFTER three months of delay, President Ivan Gašparovič has finally decided that he will not name Deputy Finance Minister Vladimír Tvaroška to the post of vice governor of the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS). As vice-governor, Tvaroška would have been responsible for monetary policy, a key responsibility ahead of the planned introduction of the euro in 2009.
Východná absent this year
THE MOST prominent Slovak folk festival held annually in the eastern village of Východná will not take place this year. The break in the festival's 50-year tradition was due to an unexpectedly long winter that postponed the construction of a new amphitheatre area for six weeks.
The case against Smer
IF the party that is likely to win these elections were a standard left-wing party with a sincere programme designed by committed socialists and enacted by credible professionals, there would be nothing to object to in Smer's current popularity. Voters would make their choices on June 17, and stand a good chance of getting what they asked for.
